Whether they choose to use it or not, humans have an instinctive ability to detect bullshit and have a right to vote their choice. As for disallowing access to a university because of a test score produces a self-fulfilling prophecy. -- PRAY, v. Depends on the university. Some will sure refuse you. Here in California, you sure can't get into, say, UCLA without at least half decent scores. The Cal State universities are another matter. I recall checking their admission requirements some years back. You pretty much have to be able to breathe (and exceptions can probably be made for that one - say if you need a machine to do it for you). -- Richard Maine | Good judgment comes from experience; email: last name at domain . net | experience comes from bad judgment. domain: summertriangle | -- Mark Twain

I recall attending an open day and interview at one UK university and one of the professors said that while they might offer places conditional on getting a couple of "D" grades at school (A being the highest), they were doing that because they saw potential in you. If a couple of "D" grades was the true extent of your ability, then you weren't going to last the course. The university I chose had much higher exam requirements, but once you were in, you were in, and they offered alternative courses for those who didn't do so well in the first year rather than chucking them out. -- Paul Sture

Purdue, where I went to undergrad school, had real requirements for out-of-state students, but they were a land grant (or some such thing - I forget the details) school, which pretty much meant that the in-state admission requirements were trivial. They kept quality up by just quickly flunking out a lot of the people who didn't really belong there in the first place. Seemed bit of a waste, really. I recall first year physics... well, not that I ever attended the classes except for the exams. Average grades on the very easy exams were in the 20's and 30's range out of 100. When seeing exams handed back, I would occasionally notice single digit grades. -- Richard Maine | Good judgment comes from experience; email: last name at domain . net | experience comes from bad judgment. domain: summertriangle | -- Mark Twain

The UK tried to avoid that by having two sets of exams, one at 15/16 known as Ordinary or 'O-levels' and the next set at 17/18 known as Advanced or 'A-levels'. You typically took up to 8 O-levels and 3 A-levels. These were set and marked by national exam boards and universities used the results as a way of weeding out many who wouldn't make it. Scotland has a slightly different system. > I recall first year physics... well, not that I ever attended the > classes except for the exams. We didn't get to see the marks for the end of year exams, though I found out mine a few years ago when I needed a transcript of my university results so that I could get my degree officially recognised as the appropriate Swiss equivalent. -- Paul Sture

I for one didn't get the grades my teachers expected at high school, and that was largely down to the home environment. Once I was away from the parental home I could study in peace. For example the first essay I wrote at university took me a good 12 hours of research and refinement and was much shorter than the essays other students submitted, but I got excellent marks for it. At the parental home I would simply not have had 12 hours to spend on it. -- Paul Sture
