I swapped all my cheap switches for Netgear "ProSAFE" switches. The biggest difference I've noticed is that machines do not randomly stop seeing the LAN and I never have to reboot the switches. But I have dozens of devices on my LAN, and cheapo switches really only seem cheapo when you have a lot of traffic. -- I think I found your marbles.
