I don't see that you stated which internet provider you are using, but...
I had the same problem on AT&T with their yahoo SMTP server a while 
back. I'm pretty sure my issue was related to the port number, but I 
frankly didn't have time to diddle around with troublshooting it to h*ll 
and back. Finally I just switched back to my original old bellsouth.net 
server and now my outgoing mail works fine.
