The new (to me) iMac running 10.7.5 has wireless capability built in. It sees and uses our wi-fi<-->DSL box just fine. It also has a nifty little wired Ethernet port. Now isn't that just special? :) The old machine, a Sawtooth G4 maxed out at 10.4.11, likewise has wireless (via a card and external antenna combo rather than built-in) which it also uses just fine. And - Surprise! - it has an Ethernet port. <cue F/X - collective crowd gasp> I want both rigs to talk to the intertubewebz through their individual wi-fi capability - which works exactly as expected and intended. When both are online this way, copy/transfer operations *BETWEEN THE TWO MACHINES* are insanely slow - a few hundred megs is predicted to take 16 hours - and if I watch it through a few updates, it looks like that just might be a reasonable prediction. 3 gigs is predicted to take *FOUR DAYS*???? Urk... So I plug an Ethernet cable in between them, set things up, try again, and find that it's just as slow. <head-scratch> <lightbulb> Turn off the wireless on the old machine. Try to xfer the few hundred meg directory again. "... about 4 minutes remaining". That's a bit more like it... except that machine isn't talking to the internet. <grumble> Turn wireless (and thus, internet) back on. Trying the xfers again gives me the insanely long time estimates again. Wassup with THAT? It *APPEARS* that trying to transfer between the two machines prefers to use the wireless route for some insane reason - Seems as though I can't have both machines online via wireless and have the ethernet between them "active" at the same time. What've I got screwed up? -- If the door is baroque don't be Haydn. Come around Bach and jiggle the Handel.
