openwrt and dd-wrt are linux distributions for routers

some routers come pre-installed with openwrt or dd-wrt

many of the proprietary router oses lack features and performance

openwrt and dd-wrt have reasonably good firewall setups out of the box

depending on the router hardware and amount of memory you can add lots
of nice features too

qos and bandwidth usage by device or address
caching dns or forwarding dns

real time graphs of network use
