Guys,

Follow-up. I uninstalled TotalFinder (sniff) upgraded to El Capitan,
and installed PathFinder.

PathFinder does much more than I want and it cost me $40 US. It is an
acceptable replacement for TotalFinder: it gives me "folders on top"
and it gives me two windows side-by-side. I might find a use for the
other features as well.
