Sounds to me like the cables that connect the motherboard to the display may have developed a small break -- they run through the hinges, so it's not uncommon on older laptops that have been opened and closed a lot. It happened to my first PowerBook G4 (2005), but I never had it repaired, so not sure what the cost would be.
