Not so fast, JF.  You're again making assumptions, which are contrary 
to fact.  As it says in the headers, "Invalid assumptions tend to 
produce invalid conclusions."

As has been mentioned previously, you will be hard limited by the 
optical drive's read/write speeds, regardless the theoretical the 
transfer rates available to you.  USB 2.0 (480 Mb/sec) will suffice 
for your purposes.  USB 3 may improve performance.  (Then again, it 
may not.)  Anything faster may give you all kinds of warm-fuzzies, but 
it won't be any speedier in the practical application at hand.

It has also been pointed out to you, using Blu-ray disks for backup is 
a less than optimal choice, but it is your choice to make.
