X was a design from MIT by the students working the project, so go 
figure.  Later it took a lot of work by IBM, DEC, Sun, SGI, and HP to 
get X to work correctly, but by then it was an unorganized mess.
X isn't part of the UNIX specification and never was.  Even Microsoft 
worked on parts of it in regards to widgets.
