There may be several reasons for that. Mostly, I found Spotlight or a
virus background scanner to work on the disk.
There may be also a problem with your operating system. A week ago, I
could not backup on an external disk. After several testing, I replaced
the OS on that computer.

Just unmount that drive, then Disk Warrior has access to it, does the
repair and mounts the drive after repair.

No need to use terminal.

There might be also a problem with spotlight. Disable it for the
external drive or rebuild the Spotlight meta data files (index).
Utilities like Tinkertools2System, Cocktail, MacPilot or Onyx might
help you to do so.
