the 5s should fit in any pants pocket, front or back. it's not a very
big phone. a 6s+ might be a bit much for typical pants but there are
pants with larger pockets that can hold it.

a 5s won't fit in a handwarmer pocket? just how tiny are these pockets?

gaming is just one example, not the only example. 

another is astronomy apps, where you hold the phone or tablet while
looking at stars in the sky and it shows you a star map with each star
identified along with information about it, etc. can't be done with a
laptop and certainly not a desktop.

yet another is drawing/painting with the apple pencil. the microsoft
surface studio is designed for that type of work, but it ain't cheap.
