There's really no way of knowing whether the drive issues cause the
system not to be able to start up properly until you find out what's
actually preventing startup.

Personally I wouldn't bother trying to figure out more. I'd just replace
the drive with a new one, install a fresh OS on the new drive, hook up
the old drive to the computer during installation, and let the setup
assistant migrate the data from the old drive to the new system when
prompted.
