Well, could be a lot of things. Try disconnecting all external devices 
except the keyboard and mouse and restart with the shift key held down 
until the machine has booted. This is a 'safe boot' which forces various 
extensions _not_ to be loaded. Disconnecting the peripherals will 
eliminate problems specific to those externals. If it boots, run Disk 
Utility to verify the boot volume.

If you have the same problems after a safe boot, how old is your hard 
drive? If over 3-5 years old, it'd be my prime suspect. Try booting from 
an external drive. If that also has the same problems, then perhaps the 
power supply is dying.
