500MB is not high RAM usage.

As for CPU, remember that 100% CPU on a mmodern MBP means "1/8th of the
CPU power). The onyl reason Safari would be that high would be because
of the chat, or you had Flash running somewhere.

Did the processor use drop when you closed the chat? I have 6 tabs open
and Safari is using 0.5% CPU (out of 8 virtual cores).
