Maybe the mouse signals are getting mixed up and it thinks that's a
middle-click. Does the same problem happen in Chrome when using a
USB mouse? If not, you might want to try disabling the driver for
the touchpad/trackpoint in Device Manager and see if that fixes the
freezing problem as well. You could also disabling the touchpad
and trackpoint in the BIOS settings.

The desktop not freezing in Safe Mode could suggest that it's a
driver problem, or it may be a hardware fault with the
touchpad/trackpoint causing it to send signals that confuse the
driver and make it hang when not in safe mode.
