You can, >of course, deliver DisplayPort (display only) through an HDMI port. Well it would be more accurate to say that HDMI without audio is DVI. HDMI uses the same electrical signaling as DVI and is forwards and backwards compatible as far as video goes. DVI also can support HDCP, as this was necessary to watch Blu-Rays on PCs before HDMI connectors became standard on video cards. DisplayPort asupports both audio and HDCP, and even allows for audio-only devices. HDMI requires all devices to support video. DisplayPort uses a completely different signaling method than HDMI (and DVI) and in general needs an active adapter to convert between the formats. (Although DisplayPort optionally allows HDMI/DVI signaling to be used in combination with much a cheaper passive adapter.) >I have the Nvidia HD Audio drivers installed, and it puts 4 Nvidia devices on >the internal HD audio bus (Locations 0-4, whatever that means), but the only >audio playback devices that show up on my "Sound" control panel are the VIA HD >audio devices. If you're using Windows 7 (and I think Vista), right click on the background of the Playback tab of the Sound control panel and enable "Show Disconnected Devices". They should show up then. >The video card just needs to be on the bus so that it can >deliver sound to a TV through HDMI, and so it can do HDCP negotiated high >quality sound/video for Blu-ray. The drivers put it on the bus. I think the "HD audio bus" is just a virtual creation of Windows to group together devices based on the same Windows driver or driver model. It dosn't represent an actual physical (or even logical) bus connecting your NVIDIA and VIA HD audio devices together. I'm not sure why you have 4 audio devices showing up on your video card. My ATI card only has one. It could simply be that it supports some combination of 4 DisplayPort and HDMI devices all with seperate distinct audio streams. I wouldn't delete the drivers either. Never know when you might connect your video card to something that can use them.
