I was under the (perhaps mistaken) impression that an HDMI output card had to
negotiate HDCP with any devices it was attached to, as each device needs to
identify along an HDCP I/O chain, or LQ analog audio/downsampled video would be
sent to non-authorized output devices (to cover the "analog hole"). This was a
problem that a lot of Vista users complained about a few years back. Bad sound,
because something about the HDCP negotiation, or the software governing it,
failed.

So not the audio itself, just to carry the DRM chain that enables full quality.
