Vendor trash.  It's a way of making the world seem more 'realistic' while
still letting you make income from killing monsters.  If you kill a rat
and it drops gold, people complain that it's unrealistic.  So instead
you kill a rat and it drops a rat tail, which you can sell for gold.

If they'd gone the other way they'd doubtless be getting beaten up for
jumping on the dreaded 'streamlining' bandwagon.
