This is fun guys.

As far as Steam goes, JAB apparently lives in a world where one's ideals and
virtues are *not* a luxury that we all purchase, pay dearly for, and sometimes
shed when the economics become compelling, or necessary. Perhaps he is very,
very wealthy. Games are not a life or death issue, but neither are they
trivial. Given that range, I can suffer some mild hypocrisy from John.

For me? Paying bloaty Gabe Newell shovelware prices for non-Valve games on
Steam is a whole different ballgame from paying him boxed set prices for the
privilege of partaking of his overpriced, encrypted, whim-revokable electrons.
My issue has *always* been the price, however. WiiWare, which is totally locked
to my individual console, even if it breaks, has mangaged to get me to purchase
a few things simply because they cost $5-10. At that point, I'm buying "Mappy"
on WiiWare, even though I've already got it on MAME (with a defunct PCB in my
closet somewhere), just to see what they've done with it.

I refer to this price point as "at the price of a very nice yo-yo." At that
point, why not? (Note: http://bit.ly/h6EiBz. High performance yo-yo's.)

Here's my calculus:

Amazon.com is $3 more expensive in my locale ($47.99 vs. $44.99). So, since I
can self-publish this game (for my own use), essentially, I'd be paying $3 for
DVD paint and a box. My "stuff" is a cakebox of blank DVDs and no-DRM. One DVD
does not cost $3.

Add some DRM, which I place at a rough economic value of -$15.00, and that game
would have to be selling for $32.99 at Amazon before I bought it.

If I wait, I could probably get that price.

But it seems a no-brainer to get it from GOG, get insider goodies from
CD-Projekt, and get Divine Divinity (one of a few RPG choices) as well. Surely,
I will miss having a box for my collection, but those haven't been the same
since they went to DVD hardcases. *And* I get to support one of the few
publishers, and the developers pretty much directly, that aren't harassing
their paying customers?

Overall, I'm looking forward to this release, and we all have our reasons for
getting it from our particular sources. I think "No DRM" is worth supporting,
even to paying 15 extra for a DRM-less game. They aren't asking that. They're
asking less. I hope this distribution model succeeds as well as Steam has, and
if I get a good value for it too? Win-win.
