Hello,

I've been looking for VAX RAM for years now, and I couldn't find any.
It's getting pretty rare, but I'd like to max-out the ram in my VAXstation.

I found the machine in a dumpster of my university, and apart for broken
hard drives, it's ok. I got new hard drives, some periphery, but in order
to run NetBSD on it, in a usable manner, I need more ram. 16MB is just too
little. In case anyone happens to own VAXstation 3100 M76 RAM modules,
please contact me.

I live in germany, but I'll pay for shipping even when it's from the US.

Getting a replacement RTC was easy as pie, I just sampled one from
Dallas Semiconductor.

Also: In case anyone happens to have some of those weird screws that hold
the drives to the mid-deck (and those rubber-spacers that go onto those
screws), and would sell them to me, please contact me as well .

Cheers,
--polemon

Where in Germany are you? I MIGHT have some memory you could use.

I don't have a picture of the RAM modules in question right now, there's
quite a large amount of other junk sitting on top of the VAX. But in case it'll
help, I can take a photo of the modules.

Hello
Are they the same 4meg modules that work in a 3100-40 on up?? If Mr
Helbig cannot help you send me a
e-mail. I have some that you can have, if you pick up the postage from
the states.

The part number is MS44-AA. I don't know if that's the same on 3100 M40.

Unfortunately neither these easy-to-remember numbers
nor the real capacity are clearly printed on the parts.
There are modules for the VS4000 which look almost the same,
they may even have 16MB, but won't fit/work in a VS3176.
One should look for cryptic numbers such as

 5419103 5019079-01

which is what you want.

If people have started cleaning out their VAX stashes, I can use memory
modules for any models of the VAXStation 3100. I have at least one
from the smallest to the next to the last one produced. And, believe
it or not, I still use them once off and on. For those who noted that
Frank daCruz announced the end of the Kermit Project at Columbia, a
number of those available binaries were built by Frank on my machines.

According to the maintenance guide it's MS44-AA.

Here's a pictogram from the maintenance manual:

MS44 memory is also used in VAXstation 4000 models (-60, -90, -90A)
isn't it?

yes, but not all parts from/for 4000 will fit/work in

Not all memory parts are interchangeable?
I know that video boards in the VAXstation 3100-series are different
from those used
in the VAXstation 4000 models. The video controller in a VS4000-60
won't fit in a VS4000-90(A)
and v.v. But I was under the impression that MS44 memory may be used
in VS3100's and
VS4000's that support that memory. E.g. the VS3100-GPS uses different
memory so is excluded
from this discussion.
Turbochannel devices that fit in a VAXstation 4000-90(A) are not
supported in any model of the VAX
or VAXstation 3100 series.

I have parts labelled

54-19145-AU 5019144-01

(MS44-AU ?) which look almost like VS3176 4MB modules,
but either didn't fit exactly or weren't
recognized.

According to the docs I have access to only the MS44-AA modules (part
number 54-19103-AA) work in the 3100/76. These modules can also be used
in the 4000-60 and 4000-90(A?).

There are other MS44 parts, including:
MS44L-AA (part# 54-19145-AA, a "low cost" 4 MB module)
(I also found MS44-AL and MS44L-AL with the same description)
MS44-CA (part# 54-19103-CA, 16 MB)

all of which can be used in the 4000-60 and 4000-90 models.

> Ebay:

(sorry for the broken Link)
this (8 MB MS44L-BA) will probably not work in the 3100/76, nor in the
4000 models. It was probably used in the MicroVAX 3100 Model 40 and
Model 80, and another guide explicitely mentions the 8 MB modules could
not be reused when upgrading a Model 80 to a Model 90.

The modules should have the two distinguishing letters (AA, BA, CA)
etched into the lower left corner.

The VAXstation 4000 Model 96 SOC lists, along with the MS44-CA module, a
faster MS44L-EA module (4 MB, operating at 60ns vs. 100ns for all the
other MS44(L) modules).

Other MS44(L) part numbers were used for memory "kits":

MS44L-BC 16 MB ECC memory for 3100 Models 85 and 96
(consists of four MS44L–AA (4 MB) modules)
MS44-DA 32 MB (consists of two 16 MB modules)
MS44-DC 64 MB ECC memory for 3100 Models 85 and 96
(consists of four MS44–CA (16 MB) modules)
MS44L-FA 16 MB (consist of four of the faster MS44L-EA modules)

And there's probably more... :-)

Hans.

Thanks, that will fill in a few gaps in the Field Guide for DEC SIMMs
I started a very long time ago: http://www.chrisjdoran.plus.com/simms.html
I never got around to adding the photographs. If anyone can add more
modules fill in the gaps, or supply corrections, please let me know.

Polemon:

I may be some of some assistance, both with the memory and the screws.
I will have to dig around in my "Big Box 'O DEC" tonight after work.

I am always looking for those screws, too. But I have had luck at the
local hardware store with grommets, bushings and normal screws,

That'd be really great!
If you happen to have a terminator for the external SCSI bus, I'd be
interested in that, too.

I am a bit short of this kind of memory too after the PSU on one of my
machines turned out to be out of tolerance and started damaging the modules.
I would be happy to pay shipping from the US to the UK. If you have some of
those screws with the rubber grommets too I would be interested in those
too.

If anyone has any 50-pin SCSI disks that are less than 1GB in capacity I
would be interested in those too.

Regards

Rob

After looking for those modules for about two years, I almost got myself to
rebuilding them myself. They used pretty standard components, so it shouldn't
be too much of a problem to make them myself.

I can't believe they used such non-standard screws there. There's got to be
a way to find something that makes a good replacement. As for those rubber
spacers, this is basically just a plastic washer, making something similar
out of DIY parts should be possible as well.

They've been used in other components as well:

I don't know if they'll fit, but they look pretty similar (Lian Li OH-01A):
