Atari has made the XF521 disk drive as 1050 compatible however the disk drive was not released yet when Atari 65XE/130XE came out but XF521 has been cancelled. Why's that? I am wondering if XF disk drive mod can be made, 1050 board and mechanism removed from XL style box and put into XE style. XF521 looks a light beige case matching the color scheme of the Atari XE. Similar as Commodore 1541C. Where can I find the XE disk drive mod? - JT

Why's that? I would presume because they had plenty of 1050 units stockpiled already. Either that or they decided it was less expensive to manufacture more 1050 drives than to manufacture the XF521. Either way it got to be a problem because the supply of 1050 drives dried up well before the XF551 finally came out. This was particularly an issue fall 1987 when Atari was launching the XE game system and touting its ability to play all the existing 400/800/XL/XE disk games, when Atari didn't actually have any disk drives available to sell. > I am wondering if XF disk drive mod can be made, 1050 board and > mechanism removed from XL style box and put into XE style. For the XE style case would you use the case of an XF551? I don't think I've ever heard of someone moving the entire innards of a 1050 into an XF551 case. It seems like the only potential issue would be whether it would physically fit. Or how much modification you'd have to do to the case to make it fit. -- Michael Current ~ michael@mcurrent.name ~ http://mcurrent.name/
