Yeah, I drop by Atari Age every once but not enough time to
participate.

My posts are more like senile ramblings lately. Just to make them into
one cognitive thought. One of my favorite games of all time was Pools
of Radiance which never made it to the Atari. I still play a lot of
Rogue. We never got a good Rogue either. I loved Dungeon Master too.

Had Atari made a 256 character mode it would have made the graphics
for porting those types of games *SO* much easier. Specifically they
should have used the high bit to switch character sets instead of
providing inverse. This would have made it trivial to mix graphics and
40 column text on the same line. There's something like 85 printable
ASCII characters so you are limited to 43 redefined characters and
artifacting if you want color. I liked the Ultimas which used
artifacting but for several reasons don't like doing it myself. Being
able to switch between a graphic 0 and graphic 12, each with their own
character set without resorting to DLI's or kernals would be trick.

I finally got my 'Atari Area' back after 20 years. Looking back at the
stuff I have done, hardware hacks, terminal programs, utilities, et
cetera, the one gaping hole is a lousy game. I say lousy because I
don't really have what it takes to polish a game to the point it would
be considered good. I think I will set up a system and start pounding
out some code just to see if I can make it graphically interesting
enough to get inspired.

Rick
