About two weeks ago I posted here asking for help and guidance. As of last night, thanks to the help and guidance that you guys provided, I hooked up my null modem cable, ran ADT, bootstrapped my IIGS, and began writing disk images. Thank you *very much* for helping get this newbie started. I have to say, bootstrapping and transferring disk images feels almost magical. And it's amazing to be able to do something with my IIGS other than writing BASIC programs. Now that I'm up and running, do you guys have any recommendations for what I can do to really savor the experience and take advantage of the power of the IIGS? I have a ROM 1 machine with 512K of RAM, which is a bit disappointing. So far I've been poking around System 4 a bit and have played a few older Apple II games, in those cases where I could figure out the commands. Next up for tonight will be messing around with Claris Works GS and trying to get a few GS games to run, if they will with my meager amount of RAM. Thanks again for helping get me on my feet. So far jumping back into Apple IIs has been even more rewarding than I expected. Cheers, Chris Hafner

A pretty cool game that makes good show of the GS (graphics & sound) is The Immortal. Unfortunately, you will need a RAM upgrade for your machine. It requires 1 MB of RAM. In the mean time, Ancient Land of Ys is also pretty nifty, and will run with 512 kb of RAM. -- ]DF$ Mac GUI Vault - A source for retro Apple II and Macintosh computing. http://macgui.com/vault/

Chris, > Now that I'm up and running, do you guys have any recommendations for > what I can do to really savor the experience and take advantage of the > power of the IIGS? It depends how far you want to go. The IIgs can surf the net, do your emails, handle Usenet and this group, download through FTP, to name but a few things it can do over and above games. To fully use the IIgs, you will need some bulk storage of some sort, and these days that means an interface to use an SD card as hard disk storage. So look out for things like Marinetti, to get you online, a CFFA card for storage, then ask here for further pointers as to where to get all these things! Cheers - Ewen

There are plenty of IIGS game classics that require only 512k of RAM: http://www.whatisthe2gs.apple2.org.za/zany-golf http://www.whatisthe2gs.apple2.org.za/world-games http://www.whatisthe2gs.apple2.org.za/winter-games http://www.whatisthe2gs.apple2.org.za/skate-or-die http://www.whatisthe2gs.apple2.org.za/alien-mind http://www.whatisthe2gs.apple2.org.za/arkanoid http://www.whatisthe2gs.apple2.org.za/arkanoid-ii http://www.whatisthe2gs.apple2.org.za/crystal-quest http://www.whatisthe2gs.apple2.org.za/thexder http://www.whatisthe2gs.apple2.org.za/silpheed http://www.whatisthe2gs.apple2.org.za/xenocide Anyways...keep looking through the site and you'll find more. - Alex

Thanks, everybody! Ewen, I'm already mulling over a CF mass storage option, and I'll definitely dig into those games Alex. I had my daughter playing Math Blaster Plus GS and Oregon Trail last night, and that was pretty neat for all involved. One quick question - in playing older Apple II games, I'm finding some difficulty in providing keyboard inputs. Some of it could be just my infamiliarity with the control schemes in those games, but when playing Spy Hunter, for instance, after pressing every single button on the keyboard, I can't seem to make the car move. In Pirates!, the cursor moves to the bottom of every menu (as if somebody is holding the down arrow) and I can't even navigate the menus unless I want the last option in each menu. Any ideas or hints on what I could be doing wrong? I know the older Apple II keyboards differ, and so I don't really expect the IIGS arrow keys to work, and I've tried keeping Caps Lock on to simulate all-caps text input. But after trying literally every key on the keyboard, it's still not working and I'm stumped. Cheers, Chris Hafner

A LOT of the 8-bit games REQUIRE a joystick. IIGS games tend to offer control with both. - Alex

I just got my GS up and running over the past 90 days. I upgraded the memory card to 512K which was a mistake as most all the GS based games and apps really do require 1 MB so I would highly recommend upgrading to 1 MB as your next upgrade.

I ordered the necessary parts to do the ADT transfering and I can't wait! I ran into the same issue with Spyhunter and some other games as well. Does oregon trail run in gs/os or does it just boot straight off the disk?

Look around the http://www.whatisthe2gs.apple2.org.za/ website , you'll find tons of games for the GS that will run from 3.5 disk. Dean
