For an IP stack that still doesn't actually do anything useful, Marina is now more capable than ever in the June 2016 edition. ICMP is the name of the game in this edition, which features enhanced ICMP support to boost RFC compliance, namely: Marina now replies to ICMP Echo requests (ping!) and Marina will send a port/destination unreachable message when a foreign host attempts to send data to a UDP port on Marina that is not open. The Marina demo is now easier to run because a startup program detects whether you have an Uthernet or Uthernet II and loads the appropriate version of Marina! Your network card must be in either slot 2 or slot 3, however. For the ultimate in ping response you need to assemble Marina with debug mode turned off. As it turns out, the Uthernet II is slightly faster than the original Uthernet. I tested back in April with a Transwarp accelerator, and got an average ping time of 2.758 ms with the original Uthernet, and a slightly faster 2.625 ms average with the new Uthernet II. Ping averages were about 2.7 times slower than without the Transwarp. This is with a direct cross-over cable connection between a Mac mini with Mac OS X and the Apple IIe. Now that Marina will respond to pings, I'd like to get more people testing Marina in different networking environments. As usual, the Marina IP web site, user's manual, and Marina Technical Library have all been updated. http://marina.a2hq.com/ TCP support is still forthcoming, and this edition includes some very small advancements towards that end. Unfortunately, writing TCP in assembly language requires a great deal of concentration, and regrettably I can no longer justify the expense of endless hours in front of the Apple II keyboard that I once could. Therefore I must announce that, excepting any compatibility issues brought up through testing Marina in various networking environments, this will be the last edition of Marina for some time. -- ]DF$ The Marina IP stack for Apple II-- http://marina.a2hq.com/
