When I worked in the Color Standard indusry in the 1980's we calibrated all of our monitors before shipiing a turnkey color system using a grayscale strip provided by Kodak. We also provided mapping of colors for printers using matched colors and dithers. The printer colors were dithers matched to the calibrated monitor. We worked with Targa Boards and Targa Board Clones like the EV680 form Everex and 16 bit color in the days before TrueColor VGA. We also calibrated VGA moniors using the same greyscale technique when ATI first produced the Wonder XL circa 1990-1991, and also for Evrex's first TrueColor VGA's. Some of the printers we supported were high-end Kodak 5 x 5 photo printers, and Tektronix theraml wax printers. The reason I am telling you all this is that in order for any color sonsistency on real video of any kind at all, your monitor must be calbrated. Yes Phosphors get old and dim, and not all monitors are created equal but the draned things don't calibrate themselves. But an accurately calibrated monitor using some kind of accurately printed standard will be consistent whereas fiddling with the dials at random does not work worth a darn. That's my rant for today.
