load High byte into accumulator:

LDA >byte

or 

LDA <byte

in math, > is greater than.  < is less than.

We read right to left...

---    LDA >byte makes more sense to me.  I read "Load Accumulator with 'greater than' byte".  Greater than = higher, more.  Less than = lower.
