#5088 — Acorn/Pace/ROOL Risc PC for sale - Cambridge or Wakefield pickup

Apologies for the blatant advert :-) but I'm listing my faithful old
Risc PC on eBay and, given my history with Acorn, Pace and ROOL, U
though this might be of interest to some of the collectors/enthusiasts
that read c.s.a.misc.

  http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=261009722954

Since the machine is old and fragile, even though it has its original
box, I don't want to ship it anywhere. Instead, I've listed it for
collection from my home in Cambridge or, if the buyer wishes, I can
bring it to the Wakefield show and you can pick it up from the ROOL
stand. There are also a few other bits such as a third slice and
various original software discs (but not much original packaging for
that software unfortuntely due to a clearout a short while ago).

It's on a short 3-day auction, finishing at around 10:18pm on Thursday.
That gives the buyer and I time to sort out collection details etc.
before Wakefield.

It has an awful lot of 26-bit only software on it, so it's actually a
very useful, productive machine; but I really need the space it was
taking up and my Iyonix covers most of my ROOL etc. usage. I have VRPC
for a few remaining 26-bit only utilities I need from time to time.

Misread that as part of your downward spiral: Acorn, Pace, ROOL, U

Eh?

Anyway, if people are still interested - just the one bid so far, so it's looking like it could be something of a bargain basement price for whoever might be considering joining in with the auction.

I guess that D thought the U was the continuation of a list of employers,
as did I on first read.

I don't think you need to waste your efforts worrying about it!

Oh, definitely not. I mean as a corporate entity, Acorn was a bit of a disaster, right? Hardly a shining example of commercial success in the twilight years when I was there.

I think it was amongst the most talented group of engineers and nicest people I've had the pleasure to work with, for sure. The work I did on the VideoCtrl stack was important as it set a pattern of proposing and developing larger scale component based software and developing a complete architectural overview of a bigger system.

In terms of personal achievements though, I think stuff I've since done either personally or as a contractor has been more important, far more widely used, better implemented - and better paid. Greater experience generates better software.

Well, in the end it went for £51. Considering how many hours I spent cleaning it up and getting it in good condition for sale, my policy on all old Acorn kit is now as follows: Dump it in the skip.

It's not been a great week.

A short auction with a daytime midweek finish and collection only are all
limiting factors. And ignoring the history, it's not a particularly well
specced machine. As we all know they go on forever. ;-)

After work midweek finishes are often recommended on eBay so I don't really buy (ho ho) that argument.

The collection issue is perhaps the main one, but then given how cheap the whole community seems to expect things to be now, a > £30 postage cost for a £51 pound item seems a bit ludicrous.

There's a 2-slot backplane on eBay for £12.99. I've seen Ethernet podules go for upwards of £17 just last week. Implication is it would've been cheaper to rip it apart and sell it for the parts. I could've sold things like Impression Publisher and the dongle for probably almost as much as the whole machine's gone for.

Then there's this news thread, most of which seems to consist of me trying to sell my old machine, hoping to make some money back, but which generated a stream of rather odd/aggressive replies some of which got rather personal.

> it's not a particularly well specced machine.

For a Risc PC, it's a well specified machine with some relatively unusual additions (MIDI card, working 486, Morley SCSI and spare third slice).

Anyway, like I say, lesson learned; there's no community interest and eBay isn't what it used to be. The poor guy who bid £50 was outbid by one other person at £51 with - and I was watching the auction countdown - ONE SECOND left to go. So that's just a cynical attempt to game the whole thing, snatch the auction from someone who had the guts to bid early and to make sure that the absolute bare minimum price was paid. So between this thread and that auction, there's a little bit of the modern day RISC OS community laid bare.

Such is life, and I'll be remembering that when I'm stood on the ROOL stand for several hours tomorrow getting paid nothing as usual for my efforts! So much for karma.

Yes , it does seem on occasions a bit hit and miss about what price
you get for something and I'm sure a lot of luck is in there as well
as to timing etc.

Yes, sometimes people are just looking for something specific and I've
seen StrongArm cards sell for far in excess of the cost of a RiscPC
with one in.

Yes sometimes people forget the time and effort a lot of people put in
to the RISC OS community often for free. I'm sure you'll a far more
positive experience on Saturday and leave this episode behind.

ROOL and the rest of the individuals who continue to support RISC OS
have done a great job over the past couple of years and without the
likes of you then RISC OS would be confined to running as a wholly
emulated OS so thanks for all your collective efforts.

Fairy nuff. My experience (from a feedback base of around 800) is that a
Sunday finish at around 22.00 gives the best results. But then I don't do
much buying/selling of RISC OS things.

No reason it should cost anywhere near 30 quid to post. But then it gives
the choice of the whole country - not just those who live close to you

Well yes. Individual parts are always worth more than the sum. But these
will all be available by post.

Can't comment on that.

A 486 card is 'worth' near zero. A 586, different. But either really just
a curiosity. And the same really with SCSI these days. And I say this as
one with two RPCs used all the time both with SCSI cards. Can't comment on
MIDI.

Hmm. You seem to have missed the whole idea of Ebay. Perhaps you should
have listed it with a BIN, if you don't like auctions and what those
implie.

Think of the poor sods still trying to make a living out of RISC OS. ;-)

Don't know where you get >30 GBP from. Carriage for that would have been
less than 10 GBP.

Whatever you might think the 'collection only' restriction would have been a
major factor. The cost of collecting from Cambridge, quite apart from the
time, meant that I didn't bother to bid (I would have been prepared to offer
more than the winning bid) and the wording seemed to indicate that you
wouldn't respond favourably to a message asking if you'd allow collection by
courier.

If you restrict your potential market and don't make it easy for customers
you must expect items to sell for less than their 'real' worth.

What?! Who with? Last time I posted a moderate sized package via Royal Mail recorded within the UK it cost somewhere around £8. I posted a couple of heavy books more recently for about £15. The boxed Risc PC with extra slice, floppy discs, documentation etc. is enormous, very heavy and fragile. I'd like to know who you'd trust to deliver it for a tenner, could be very useful for future reference.

> The cost of collecting from Cambridge, quite apart from the

So I take it you're not attending Wakefield, which was the other collection option and the whole reason for the short duration auction.

How so? You know me well enough from ROOL and newsgroups; shame you didn't consider contacting me and asking me to ship it then, citing your low postage costs.

Funny how often people say "I *would have* done <something financial>", without actually doing it ;-)

> If you restrict your potential market and don't make it easy for customers

Yes, obviously the obstacles I put in place were insurmountable (!). Well, if there's anyone out there who wanted it - sadly for the sake of e-mailing me and asking about shipping, you might've missed out on getting the machine for - well, £52. Too late for both of us if that's the case. Wouldn't be too surprised to see the buyer list the machine on eBay next week if it's really capable of generating so much more income, as you imply.

Try www.parcel2go.co.uk. FedEx, DHL, Hermes, etc. If you're a real masochist
you can even book via Parcel Force.

No, I'm not.

Judging by your reaction to the various comments made here I see no reason
to suppose that my request would have received a sympathetic reception.

Of course, after the event people often say they "would have" done
something......:-)

Apologies. It's www.parcel2go.com. Alternatively www.p4d.co.uk.

Yes, they are cheap.

Cost me around £15 last year to ship a misadressed delivery
of books and maps back to Austria (worth some ¤250 as I
recall).

BUT...

DHL failed to collect on the promised day, and on the
following day as well.

Finally collected three days late - the excuse was tht they
did not have time to pick up as promised.

What no one tells you, of course, is whether the real reason
is because DHL cannot afford to pick up from places a little
off the beaten track (6 miles from the A66) for the heavily
discounted price.

*HELL* *NO*.

2002, bought an A3010 for cost of postage. Was basically because I
wanted one of the mezzanine processor boards to play with. Was
tracked all the way to Aldershot and then "lost" by their
subcontractor. As it coincided with my move to France, some costly
international phone calls got nowhere until they were absorbed back
into the post office and I was told my parcel number was no longer
valid.

**** them and **** the horse they rode in on; and I'm quite prepared
to say that personally to whoever was the CEO at the time [*].
Customer service? Customercentric? Yeah, pull the other one (it has
