That seems to only show the tweets to Purleyhosting from the one user.

I did manage the other day to have on the right all the tweets from PH and
on the left all the tweets to them, but I can't repeat that:-(

It all seems so difficult and complicated to the newcomer. Is there a
twitter/RISC OS user who could write a quick basic guide for twitter
virgins and put it up somewhere. I could provide space if necessary.

Clarifying the JS requirements would, of course, also be very useful.

Yes.
I found a couple of youtube get you going guides for twitter, but they
assumed you understood quite a lot. Also Twitters own help just didn't!

> Clarifying the JS requirements would, of course, also be very useful.

I think the original idea didn't normally involve using a website or smart
phones, just using text messaging, but that aspect of it doesn't seem to be
mentioned almost anywhere.

Is Twitter an open protocol? I wonder if it would be simpler to knock up
a simple client rather than try to persuade our older system to get
something useful out of a JS-heavy site?

<a few minutes of Googling later...>

Here's an introduction to what it is and what it means (socially, that is):
   http://www.bitcurrent.com/twitters-not-a-site-its-a-protocol/

And the API will be in here someplace:
   https://dev.twitter.com/docs

Best wishes,

Rick.

PS: I'm *not* volunteering. The only tweets I've ever read in my life
are those embedded in other people's blogs/sites. It seems to me
that tweets are like text messages, only you don't care who they're
being sent to. I, personally, believe the only thing that it might
be useful for is "OMFG - Obama's just declared war on Canada!" or
"OFFICIAL: 12% RISE IN STATE PENSIONS AS OF MIDNIGHT"...

Purley Hosting is not an ISP and they do not supply internet connectivity.
Therefore even when the service went down, we all still had access to the
internet via our various ISPs and so accessing Twitter was not a problem.

No: Purley are a hosting company (the clue is in the name). During the
outage my website was inaccessible and email to my normal domain wasn't
arriving, but email to my backup domain (hosted by another company) was
fine, as was email sent to my ISP-based email address (which I don't give
out).

If that's still unclear, I'm paying two companies each month for internet
services (if you ignore the backup domain): my ISP, who provide me with ADSL
and an email mailbox and POP account, and Purley, who provide DNS for my
domain name, host my website and route incoming email on towards my ISP's
mailbox.

Thanks for that thorough explanation, and for the additional
comments by Martin, Rick and Chris. I understand now.

I had thought an answer to my 'age-old and basic problem' had
emerged but it seems we are stuck with the phone, with hundreds
of customers trying to contact a handful (one, even) of
'engineers' :-(

At least Rick and I now know how to follow the conversation if
we ever have to Tweet.

Brian.

Ironically, last Thursday soon after posting that I suffered
complete loss of my TalkTalk internet connection.

Eventually, on Saturday, I was able to contact a support
engineer who told me they were having a major problem with some
parts of their network. The actual ADSL carrier was rock steady
but I was unable to reach any of the services I use (email,
usenet and web). Another phone call on Sunday elicited nothing
useful. This morning the service seems OK but the TalkTalk
status page is down.

Needless to say, I had no opportunity to try Twitter :-(

Brian.

Oddly enough our ISP was having issues at our local exchange as well,
but it just caused a slower service as they rerouted stuff while
repairs took place.

TalkTalk have just been named by users in a couple of the ISP Customer
Service surveys as the worse in the country.

I've been with TalkTalk for over 3 years now and, luckily perhaps, I
have never had to use their Customer Service.

I get 10 Mb download speed which for what I pay does me.

Yes. I'm thinking of moving to Zen, but will probably wait until
the autumn when I will have more spare time.

I've seen no mention of such a service on the TT web pages

Even if the Status page is working it often lies!

Last week (and on more than one other occasion) they (TT/f2s/?) admitted
there was a problem but the Status page said everything was fine!

What a truly awful design of website. If you have no javascript it
makes the effort to redirect you to a page with no relevance to the
one you wanted.

The ironic thing is that a suitable page actually exists.

I shall carry on ignoring twitter, for the time being.

OK, i'll keep this as a little URL file in my Purleyhosting admin
folder, for quick doubleclick in case of any future outage.

a question, however: how were we twits supposed to know that status

among emails or renewal notices or invoices from Purley?

i have never otherwise used Twitter and have no intention of doing so.
