Bah! No wonder we're still awaiting the new WebChange manual. Too busy
reading RSS feeds ;-).

Hang on... WebChange manual? Sounds familiar, like I should know what it is,
but it's escaping me right now... ;)

Indeed, and works very well with Hermes.

The site is sort-of down. He is with a host that provides a measure of
bandwidth (usually per month), and having run beyond allocation the
server is simply refusing access to the site.

It is annoying for users to see this, it is annoying for site developers
to end up with their content cut off from the world, and it is doubly
annoying as you don't have much control over who accesses.

If I might make a recommendation or two to the site owner (if they are
reading...), drop in a little bit of PHP to log accesses by IP address
and browser type. You may find a horrific amount of spider activity and
a lot of it from China.

Recommendation #1: What it your refresh time set to? Be realistic, if
you only update once or twice a week, you don't need to be telling
spiders that the content might change hourly.

Recommendation #2: If you can access .htaccess (or write tight PHP), you
might want to consider blocking accesses from China. Possibly the Soviet
Republic as well. The amount of crap I've encountered on my blog from
those locations (hello Yandex my old friend, I see you're spidering me
again [and over to Simon&Garfunkel for the rest....]) that I block the
biggest offenders by IP address. I've not felt necessary to block an
entire country, but then I've not yet had bandwidth overflow issues.
Thankfully.

Or... spring for a server hosted in the US where the prices are rosy and
the features plenty (just don't expect much in the way of sane support).
Except GoDaddy.
   Read > http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/12/23/godaddy_boycott/
   And > http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/12/28/godaddy_uturn/
But as the commentators say, "withdrawing support" and "opposing" are
two very different stances.

> Indeed, and works very well with Hermes.

Is there not a stand-alone RSS reader program?

Rick.

Has anyone succeeded in subscribing to this? My subscribe message was,
after several days, replied to by a message "... the lists's
administrator has failed to act on your post". I sent a message to the
address given, and have had so far no reply.

With best wishes,

From the site

"The ANS Newsletter is sent out roughly every two weeks and provides a
round up of news from across the RISC OS marketplace."
and
"Current Issue: No. 260 (28 March 2010)"

As a retired anaesthetist Peter your knowledge of the effects
breath-holding is no doubt far greater than mine but as a layman in this
area my advice would be "Dont".

Issue 280 here, dated 4th December 2011. Oh and yes, I do get an email once
a fortnight ;-).

Looking at the e-mail you could try

[Cut and pasted instructions.]

 2) How to subscribe to ANS

If you are reading this on the ANS web site, or have received a forwarded
copy of ANS and would like to subscribe to the mailing list, simply send
a blank e-mail to <mailto:ans-subscribe@ans.org.uk>. Alternatively use the
form on the ANS web site at <http://www.ans.org.uk/subscribe>.

For details of other commands e-mail <mailto:ans-help@ans.org.uk>.

[End cut and paste.]

Regards Ron.

Many thanks, Ron, but it seems that, in spite of the fact that I was
told that I wasn't subscribed, that I am in fact subscribed. I wait
with bated breath.

Is it just me, or do the words "organise", "punch-up" and "Irish
pub", or even something about a brewery, come to mind? :-)

With best wishes,

Peter.

I note from other replies that this was bad advice and that the
newsletter is available, apologies to all concerned. That Peter, his
floor and laughing gear were activated, not to mention the bit that came
off, sort of makes it all worth while.

What more can I say? :-)

With best wishes,

Peter.

I have been subscribed for some years and the ANS newsletters are
still being mailed out. The last one I received was Issue 280 on 4
Dec 2011. (279 was dated 31 Oct 2011).

Thanks. I've also had an off-group message saying that the newsletters
are coming through (thanks, David). I tried to re-subscribe, and then
got a message to the effect that I was already subscribed, in spite of
the fact that I'd had a message saying that the moderator hadn't done
this! It does seem a trifle disorganised, but it seems that I will get
these useful newsletters before too long.

With best wishes,

Peter.
