Careful naming of files, together with storing them in appropriate
directories and sub-directories prevents file loss.

Hanging up in our kitchen is a spiral bound collection of stiff paper
called a calender. It has five columns one for each member of the family,
even those no longer living at home. Everything is entered and is
instantly visible to all, including those not using my RPC.

In the bureau in the lounge there is a bound collection of pieces of paper
called an address book, for those names and addresses which are required
at Christams, whilst commonly used phone numbers are held in my mobile
phone and on a piece of paper fixed to the wall by the landline 'phone,
neatly printed out from a !Masterfile database. This is an application
dating back to the days of the model B, when I first started using it as
an address and 'phone book.

Note that !Masterfile is also looked after by David Holden so hopefully
can be updated.

I just export all the addresses marked "Christmas" from Organizer into
"LaBella" and it prints out labels for the the Christmas cards!

Sorry but we prefer the hand written approach. It looks nicer and more
personal.

so do we, but 100+ names and addresses is getting bit much. I now use a
suitable "handwritten" font in conjunction with Datapower.

'nicer'? For their postman? Now matter how good your handwriting may be,
it may never be clear to everyone.

> > and

'more personal'? I saw someone argue that, addressing envelopes "J Smith
Esq" - hardly personal!

If you applied your undoubted skills to (e.g.) Labella I am sure you
could come up with something nice and personal. You can add graphics etc.

It will be easier for the postman to read too.

Can the Royal Mail's kit read postcodes automatically if they're in a
script font? Certainly unlikely for some handwriting.

AFAIK, no.

Any info I have on this is on the PC, which is switched off
at present, but I am pretty certain that if you want to
claim a discount on sending more than a minimum number of
similar letters, both the actual address layout (position on
the envelope as well as line spacing, font size etc.) and
the typeface required are strictly regulated.

The scheme that I looked at a couple of years ago for
sending out brochures required the address to be printed on
the envelope, not on a label, and I think the font had to be
Helvetica, or something very similar.

All true but that's to /ensure/ the barcode and address is
machine-readable. AIUI the system can and does cater for handwriting too
but more of that fails and needs human intervention.

A lot of printed address stuff fails too, even if the
address is correct (and a lot of mail is incorrectly
addressed).

There are people who quite deliberately refuse to use the
correct address, and they are often the first to complain
when their post is delayed.

If there is a phosphor bar code on the envelope then the
OCR system could not read the address satisfactorily.

Fine provided you remember to look at it. And, of course, transfer all
those anniversaries etc each year.

Personally, I'll stick with Organizer. I'm hoping in the future it will
sync with other copies including the PC one.

I can't see ours from here... I'm at work, my son is in Winchester and my
Daughter in Fareham, so only my wife can see it.

I really wish Goggle calender was 'Organizer on line' and accessible from
any OS!

Now there is a business idea...

A bit like Firefox sync?

I'd be happy if Organizer could 'sync' over a LAN - and do so with the PC
version.

Well you can save to iCal and also import so in a way it does already
does that abet manually.

That might be suitable for some people, but it wouldn't be of much use
to me, I move between systems far too much.

Gmail with messenger works fine for me (can also access on a browser
on a mac/pc and my mobile), I would want a similar scenario.

Sounds as though the best OS for your purposes is
paper-based then...

File-o-fax is supposed to be good, but costs silly money.
But there are cloned systems which use exactly the same file
format and are much cheaper.

I even have (or maybe used to have) a paper punch that
imprinciple allowed me to format my own media.

I use Google calendars on my mobile and on PCs and Macs at various
