#6680 — Spurious "unread" items in Pluto

FromDavid H Wild <dhwild@talktalk.net>
Date2012-09-26 19:28 +0100
SubjectSpurious "unread" items in Pluto
Message-ID<52d5620b6edhwild@talktalk.net>
In the last few days I have been finding that, when I have read all the
postings in the "Acorn" bo, Pluto tells me that I have some unread items in
Comp.sys.acorn.misc. Opening up the group doesn't show any unread items -
so I have selected the group and set it to "read".

The thing is I have had to do it more than once, but only ever for this
group. Has anyone an idea about what is happening?

Are you absolutely sure there are no unread items? Forgive me if I'm
suggesting something you've already done but have you tried sorting the box
bt Status, which puts unread items at the top? Sometimes items arrive with
a wildly wrong date set and can hide themselves way down the list.
Admittedly this seems more an issue with emails than news posts but just in
case!

An entirely reasonable suggestion. I have met that phenomena fairly often
and it is fairly obvious how to deal with it. In this case it isn't like
that. Though News In shows an unread article there is no unread article
within comp.sys.acorn.misc to account for the unread article indication.

I've had this for the last 2 days with c.s.a.misc. It was not
cured by a full article repair, compact and re-index. Using
Pluto v3.04c on RiscPC.

Definitely something odd going on.

This posting appeared twice in my csa.misc listing, though
only one copy was fetched from the server.

Deleting one copy and then opening the other showed that the
copy still listed in csa.misc was "in the bin".

Closing csa. misc, the posting was not there at all, so I
retrieved it from the bin.

There are now two copies again...

Much the same happened with the posting from John Mulrooney
in this same thread, yesterday evening.

Mmmmm
And although I;m sorting on Threads-latest, the duplicates
are appearing at the bottom of the c.s.a.misc list even
though they are unread.

But as I read the posts (at the top of the list) the ones at
the bottom change to 'read'

That is strange as I have had exactly this as well! I'd assumed it was
just me.

No. I've got the problem also with Pluto 2.04b. Currently I have just the
one ghost post and just one of my marked (saved) posts is shown twice; when
I had the problem a couple of weeks ago, the number of repeated marked
posts increased to four or five - this was posts from the alphabetically
first thread being shown also at the end of the c.s.a.m section.

I solved it then by exporting each thread separately to
!NewsHound.News.folder, deleting all from c.s.a.m and then re-debatching
them.

My Pluto version is 3.04e so I don't think it is version specific.

Interesting... My Pluto is 3.04e and I don't have any spurious unread
items.

I have a single "ghost post" but no duplicate ones. I'll have to try

You are not alone - and as stated this only applies to csa.misc

My uk.d-i-y group had similar problems recently. It hasn't
happened since I moved the whole group into an external

This phenomena has shown up again. Through persistence and changing
comp.sys.acorn.misc Sorting articles to Status then a single article came
up as un-read whereas no un-read article had shown previously. I've
deleted said article and things now seem to be normal.

I've had this happen again today and it followed a repeating pattern.

Post arrives from the the thread "Local browsing"

My RISC OS box shows up orange but has no unread articles.

I shift drag over all articles in C.S.A.M. and move then to another box.
At this point the mystery article shows up and can be moved or deleted.

Other items returned to folder and problem fixed until another post in the
local browsing thread fires it off again.

Posts by Filicity S and Tennant Stuart were the last two to trigger this
for me.

Cheers,

Bob.

Yes, Bob, I confirm that's the one that affected me.

You could try turning off article compression if you haven't done so
already. It's in 'Preferences->Misc'. I used to get a lot of problems
runnning Pluto on a Pandaboard until I turned it off.

Chris.

Not sure of any relevance to my situation, Chris. Have run Pluto since
time immemorial with compression turned on and never seen the problem
described, with very few other problems.

I turned compression off "centuries" ago and I have yet to see this
problem.
