[Snip] What BT have done is to use two ways of accessing your WiFi, one private, one open. They have teamed up with Fon www.fon.com to create a UK wide open WiFi network if you are a BT customer. There are other Fon partners worldwide and a map of "spots". However if you are not with BT you can still access open WiFi by getting a Fonera access point and adding that to your home setup which gives you access to any worldwide Fon spot (such as the BT ones). I have one here. BT also dont tell you that in the UK that BT get any revenue non BT users generate rather than the person sharing thier bandwidth who would get the revenue in most other countries! Fon is available all devices such as mobile phones that access WiFi. -- besters Ned

Right. Next problem is sending my emails. Popstar seems happy fetching
them from my 123-reg box - but I *think* sent things via pop.dsl.pipex.
Going to the BT site only seems to give details on how to set up
Thunderbird etc - not the same sort of 'codes' I have in Popstar.
I Think this is the bit I mean:-
#local_user login_name password mail.isp.
And of course what various places call these things seems to be different.

I don't use POPStar for receiving mail any more (I use AntiSpam) but my !Boot.Choices.POPStar.Users file still has the settings, pretty much as you have there. This is the BTinternet one, but all the other ones are in the same format. Brian<tab>username<tab>password<tab>mail.btinternet.com<tab>Y<tab>N<tab>N<tab>Y My !Boot.Choices.POPStar.Choices starts with the following: SMTP:relay.plus.net - yours would be mail.btinternet.com SMTP.username:username SMTP.password:password The only other thing you have to do is register your domains to allow white-listing of your non-BTinternet email addresses. You'll probably need to do this on a non-RISC OS machine. Log on with your BTinternet email address and password at http://uk.mail.yahoo.com/ and click on to Options at the top, then Mail Options in the drop down menu. Down the left hand side of the page, click on Mail Accounts, then use the +Add button to add different outgoing email addresses. If you are still receiving your mail OK from your other providers, ignore the option to receive these emails via BTYahoo! mail. Lastly, click on POP & Forwarding and tell it to allow access to your BTYahoo! email via POP. Even if you never use it, you should check the BTYahoo! email address for incoming mail - service emails will be sent to the primary address as a matter of course, even if you tell them to use another address. -- Brian Howlett - email to From: address deleted unseen ---------------------------------------------------------------- I'm not telling you who I work for - in any case, there's no way anything posted (or mailed!) by me can be attributed to them....

This of course is rubbish - I was looking at the wrong file in Popstar.
This is what I now have in Popstar choices:-
SMTP:smtp.mail.btinternet.com
SMTP.username:*****@btinternet.com
SMTP.password:*****
The user name and password being the BT ones.
I've tried commenting out both the user name and password separately.

This sounds interesting, is it much the same as Wetherspoons (horrid)
system, where you have to log in to a webpage (with a compatible
browser) or is it more like McDonalds where you only register once and
(presumably) it remembers your MAC?

Ive set my SFR router to FON Wifi and when I've been out and about in France *and* managed to pick up an SFR signal on my iPod, just chose that as the service for the iPod connection, put the password (my SFR a/c log in) in and was talking to daughter in UK on Skype in seconds. I've NOT managed to connect to a BT hotspot in UK though :-( John

On my Android phone I download a Fon App from Google play and log into it. When it hits a Fon spot it automatically logs me in - the same way it does when it encounters my prtected home WiFi. You can use the Fon site to get a map of partner telcos and coverage. -- besters Ned

I'm on PAYG, and bought my phone - a Nokia N95 mainly for the excellent
camera. So ain't willing to buy another just for the sake of it. It finds
the 'fon' sites but won't let me log on. And I can't find an app to sort
this. If it won't work I'll have to find out how to turn off the fon
signal from my router - out of spite. ;-)

Perhaps contact them to try and sort it out? And make sure they know
you will stop sharing, if you don't get a good result.
I have got around similar issues of login systems designed by
lazy/stupid designers with opera mini (NOT mobile), when the built in
browser doesn't work.
Doesn't bode well for being able to log in with Netsurf though

I have an N8, (symbian) fon sounds like a good idea, but are you
limited to one device? (I'd like to use my Pi, if Netsurf can be used)

I've a feeling symbian is the problem with my Nokia - what little Googling
I did suggested no one can be bothered writing an app for that and Fon.
But I'd love to be wrong.
