It's something of a suprise to find that Cirencester and Uttoxeter are
pronounced as they look!

I've heard locals call Uttoxeter "Utchiter". Of course they may just
have been winding me up. 8-)

It's often said that Cirencester's Upper-Class pronunciation was
"Cicester", but I've never come across anyone living who would confirm
this. Nobody who lives there, and it's not far from here, calls it
anything other than "Ciren".
With best wishes,

Milngavie.
It was always fun watching confused non-Glasweigans at Queen Street (of
which I was one, once) trying -- and failing -- to match the announcements
up with the destination boards on incoming trains.

I don't think that necessarily had anything to do with pronunciation. You could observe exactly the same effect on any London main line station where (I believe) the station staff had a running competition to see who could make the announcement the most unintelligible. Of course, it could just have been crappy PA systems :-) -- David Holden - APDL - <http://www.apdl.co.uk>
