Weird, that isn't even right phonetically. (Which I do for fun on some
things)

That's so common I've begun to wonder whether the english they took to the
other side of the pond was that way.

Among others, new-q-ler anyone? But that seems to be over here as well so I
just put it down to lack of brain cells.

About 95% of Americans don't seem to be able to pronounce 'mirror'.

So, we aren't talking about the David Coulthard (F1) "murror" as in "see
him in his murrors"

Ranking alongside this mornings references in Olympic link chit chat to
"the aquotic centre"[1]. Corrected to aquatic later, presumably after a
raft of complaints to the BBC.

It's something of a suprise to find that Cirencester and Uttoxeter are

I've heard locals call Uttoxeter "Utchiter". Of course they may just

I have always understood that not so long ago the former was
pronounced 'Sinster', rather the way an American might
pronounce 'sinister'.

It's often said that Cirencester's Upper-Class pronunciation was
"Cicester", but I've never come across anyone living who would confirm
this. Nobody who lives there, and it's not far from here, calls it
anything other than "Ciren".

With best wishes,

Peter.

Milngavie.

It was always fun watching confused non-Glasweigans at Queen Street (of
which I was one, once) trying -- and failing -- to match the announcements
up with the destination boards on incoming trains.

I don't think that necessarily had anything to do with pronunciation.

You could observe exactly the same effect on any London main line station
where (I believe) the station staff had a running competition to see who
could make the announcement the most unintelligible.
