Other than the tablet acting as an external drive to exchange files, I am at a loss to understand how else you think it will interact with RISC OS. I must be missing something. The use of Android makes a Google account pretty much mandatory and therefore things like your address book are synced to the cloud. It is worthwhile having a gmail account on the tablet which can also be accessed with NetSurf (m.gmail.com) but for this you won't need a wire between them, nor can tablets normally be networked via their client USB port. -- from Tim Hill who welcomes incoming email to tim at timil dot com. * Share in a better energy supplier: http://tjrh.eu/coopnrg * Share in cheaper ethical telecoms: http://tjrh.eu/phone * Have a genuine & spam-proof address for Usenet http://www.invalid.org.uk/ ... If I was unable to get information online or from the high-street shop, or if I felt technically ignorant, I might buy a camera (if reasonably priced) from a RISC OS dealer for two reasons: 1) not all cameras will appear as a functioning drive on RISC OS when plugged in via USB. 2) not all cameras record in video formats which can be played readily on RISC OS. I guess the file format for still photos could be a problem sometimes. Our camera (six years old now) records MPEG video. OK, we use it mostly for stills but it is nice to take the odd video and to be able to play back with KinoAMP. The camera fails to appear as a mass storage device via USB, so we take the mermory stick out and use a separate reader. > Other than the tablet acting as an external drive to exchange files, I am > at a loss to understand how else you think it will interact with RISC OS. > > I must be missing something. If you have a tablet and a RISC OS machine in the same house it can be handy to set up file sharing via FTP, NFS, Samba, or similar, especially if one person might be using the RISC OS machine at the same time as another is using the tablet. My mother can access files on the machine which is usually monopolised by my father because I set up appropriate apps on the tablet and stuff on the Iyonix. You can get apps for Android which will print to a networked printer. Using Dave Higton's print server software you can share the Iyonix's printer via the JetDirect protocol. Setting up e-mail accounts so that you can continue to use Messenger on the RISC OS machine, but have the ability to read and reply from the tablet occasionally is also quite fiddly to achieve if you're not familiar with these things. Which of the above R-Comp might be supporting, who knows, as we have not really had much indication from them as to what the package consists of. At the end of the day it is not for us to criticise people for purchasing a product which might well fit their needs very well. If it doesn't suit you because you're already well up on Android and don't need anything integrating much with your desktop machine, just don't buy. Simple as that. (And not all Android tablets do act as an external drive to exchange files. The Samsung Galaxy Tab is one example, where Samsung decided to provide a different way of doing things which does not work with RISC OS. It is not easy to find this out from a shop or online, expecially when you are new to the concept.) -- Matthew Phillips Durham

Silly effers at Samsung decided to use their own brand, proprietory port instead of the universal USB or mini USB which means... as it will for most folks, you need to buy a Samsung to USB adaptor and have that sticking out the side of your Galaxy to be able to do any useful externally. Yes, more and more devices are supporting H.264 as it offers a good level of compression, along with AAC audio (better results than MP3 for the same bitrate) along with widescreen (SD) or 720p (HD) formats as standard. My eeePC901 struggles to play my phone's HD recordings fluidly [*]! That said, I think you'd end up paying a premium for resisting the march of technology... No. With some you have to have an adapter to read its memory card via USB. Seems quicker anyway than using the camera directly which I only do with the SDHC card removed in order to read internal memory. > 2) not all cameras record in video formats which can be played readily > on RISC OS. I guess the file format for still photos could be a > problem sometimes. RAW is an issue on any platform! For Video I tend to use alternatives to RISC OS because of its deficiencies on Iyonix. Even the files it will play are too slow, too small, or too coarse. If you want to be able to edit movies too, RISC OS is not really an option. (But, is anyone interested in a Risc PC with Videodesk but a dead PSU?) [Snip] > > I must be missing something. Mmm. Because of the way GMail and your contacts database is integrated across all browsers I use the tablet's native email app only for tablet specific stuff but it was Very Easy to set up with a new POP account. Fortunately, I can have as many mailboxes as I want and wouldn't want to download POP email with two devices! [Snip] > (And not all Android tablets do act as an external drive to exchange > files. Always a good idea to buy stuff online or by mail order within the UK and return it for a full legal refund within seven days without having to give a reason. Pay by credit card so that you can fall back on section 76 of the Consumer Credit Act if the seller doesn't know the distance selling regulations.
