Quite common on an RPC which has gone back to factory defaults as it will
when the battery was removed. The base screen mode can't be used by many
modern monitors. If you have a TV with a VGA input - many do these days -
that might well work.

If there's no display, press f12 to enter the command line, then try
typing blind:

configure monitortype 4
<return>
configure wimpmode 28
<return>
configure sync 0
<return>
<return>

With luck, that will restore the display, and you can then set about
restoring the rest of the configuration.

Tony

Did you first do a (switch on computer with the 'Delete' key pressed
down)
(to reset to CMOS memory to default)

Then a (switch on with the number key 4 pressed - those keys to the
righthand end of the keyboard)
(To obtain the monitor type 4)

No ... mode 27 is all that is possible. All other choices anywhere are

OK - so your Boot is not completing - or has even been invoked!

Perhaps I should refer you back to my earlier posting?

OK - you've done this bit!

You have a display, so that's easy! And DH says the drive 4 bit isn't
necessary.

Some of the previous boot stuff is still working OK - eg a back drop
and some apps on pin board ..... could it be anything else that is
stopping the mode alternatives being available?

Screen/monitor type is set to auto but when I try the only other that
is not an acorn monitor (AU4831D) I can change the resoltuion and mode
but lose the two above things, and also get "Filing system ADFS: must
be given a filename"

This means that something in !Boot is stopping it before completion. You'll
have to fix this. Clear all the old junk out (I'm sure there's lots) and try
again. You can always put it back one bit at a time.

If all else fails it is often easier to copy !Boot somewhere and install a
clean copy. Putting all the old stuff back and getting it all set the way
you want it might sound like a lot of work but it can be easier than trying
to find an elusive problem.

If you click on the Task icon (far right), then click Choices..., you
should be able to configure the machine, via the icons in that window.
Do you mean that, when you click the Display icon, only mode 27 iw
offered? What are the greyed out options?

Do you have the same amount of memory as you had before?
Click on the 'Task' icon.
go to System memory allocation
Drag the Screen memory - should go up to 2048

You could try *wimpmode 28 or 31 or 32

For the record, having fired-up a copy of RO 3.71 (in RPCEmu), I now see
that what I wrote above is not correct.

When RO 3.71 was first run, the Display icon on the iconbar also offered
only mode 27. However, this could be changed via !Boot > Resources >
!Configure > !Screen which gives access to the modes defined by the mode
definition files, contained in !Boot.Resources.Configure.Monitors.

It's logical - that's the "safe default" if the LoadModeFile command
doesn't provide an applicable monitor definition file.

Best wishes,

It depends what you've got inside the box: it's alongside the PSU, and hence
under any podules that are installed.

http://acorn.chriswhy.co.uk/Computers/SARiscPC.html has an image of the
motherboard (about half-way down the page). The descripton, below the
image, notes that the 'The battery for CMOS RAM, right, is showing signs
of corrosion and needs replacing,'.
