Annoyance is a minor part of the problem.

Trusteer's website gives the impression that it is an American company
with blue-chip credentials. In fact, it is Israeli-owned, with its head
office in Tel Aviv. If this seems unlikely, try *whois trusteer.com

If Rapport is installed, it incessantly 'phones home' and copies large
amounts of data from the host computer, to its server. What happens to
that data is unknown, but I would not be surprised to find that it is
analysed by government security agencies.

Once installed, it is not a trivial matter to un-install Rapport.

I do not understand why major banks recommend the product unless, maybe,
government is leaning on them.

Rapport was discussed extensively in a thread on alt.archimedes.bugs
from 7 November 2011 <6a60732e52.old_coaster@old_coaster.yahoo.co.uk>

And where is the home base of the firm that cracked Canal+
and ITV Digital smart cards, and just happened to let the
info out onto the Net (see recent Panorama)? Also israel.

Not too bad once you download and run
RapportSafeUninstall.exe, then use something like CCleaner
to uninstall all the stuff left, and go through the various
directories...

They want to be 'seen to be doing something'?

Quite read it. Should be compulsory reading.

That application is also written by Trusteer, and deliberately leaves
files scattered in many obscure corners.

A while ago, that process took me a whole afternoon!

AIR, in response to your earlier thread, I reckon that
overall it took me around 90 mins per machine, but obviously
some of that was time that could be put to other uses.

#4967 — Banking

I've attached this to the Barclays thread deliberately.

I check my bank accounts (various) regularly - but often I go through the
hoops imposed just to find that nothing has happened since my last visit.

My idea is that banking sites could, and perhaps should, record an IP
address and a simple reference and place a unique cookie on my machine
accordingly, and then advise if the balance had changed since the last
account access.

This could save me loads of time!

If there's no change since the last access on my 'fixed' machine (IP
address range), then I really don't need to go through lots of security
hurdles; account references, passwords etcetera.

No one else will know my balance - just that the balance hasn't changed
since the last access - and only me will know when that was.

If it had, I could then go through the tedious login procedure and find
what had changed to transfer to my spreadsheet - and then find my
precise last-login time.

If there's no change, I can skip all that and go and do something else!

Does anyone have any idea how I can promulgate this idea to all UK
internet-friendly banks? Or world-wide even!

All the time saved could be spent on something more worthwhile!

Perhaps still a potential security issue on shared machines, such as
your local mediathèque?

You just know the bank will cock it up and do something like:

   Mr. WILLIAMS, John a/c# 583839283C5
Your balance has not changed since your last connection.
You have €394,17 in two accounts.

At which point "facepalm" is the only option.

;-)

> All the time saved could be spent on something more worthwhile!

It isn't hard to do this stuff on my phone. Each bank has its plus
points - the Crédit Mutuel has an "à venir" display to warn me of stuff
about to be taken out (up to a week in advance), while La Banque Postale
tells me both my confirmed balance AND my current at-the-moment balance.
The other day I used my card for €1,70 in McDonald's (a double-lattè)
and the unconfirmed balance changed accordingly. This is quite nifty
when some payments (even done entirely electronically) take an eternity
to be dealt with.

Never tried either using RISC OS. CMB might work as it still expects
number/passcode, but the post bank has this random-button thing that
says "scripting needed" all over it.

Best wishes,

Rick.

Looks like they might have done something today, I was able to get in (using
Fresco) and transfer money between two accounts for the first time since 1st
April.
Still a backwards step IMHO - it doesn't show account numbers any more when
initially setting up the transfer, only account names, so if you've got more
than one under the same name there is only the order they are presented in
to go by.
The account numbers do eventually appear when you get to the final
confirmation stage.

Still can't get that far with Netsurf and Oregano. The Login goes fine but
then get the 'not available' message. Must have a go with Fresco.

Thanks for that message. For me it still didn't work with Oregano or
NetSurf. With Fresco the first two options also failed. Option 3 worked, but
what a long screed before getting to the account details. I was afraid to
look at any of the links in case I lost everything again.

It informed me that I has last logged on 27th October. It was in fact 21st
March. Hope their accounting is better than their calendar.

That was what I was told when I logged on to the new design for the first
time, using Firefox. Puzzled me at the time but clearly it is a 'feature'
of the new design which is nice to know.

You can rename any account for display purposes to what ever you want.
I've renamed the second deposit account they automatically set me up with
to: Don't Use!

It was OK on Saturday, but Monday got the usual "Not available"
Went through Oregano 2, NetSurf the three options, then tried Fresco, option
three again, but wiped the cookies file first, saved blank file, switched
off for half minute, then it worked.
