I have two (old) handsets (one a crude Blackberry that is
worse than useless, the other an aging, but quite reasonable
Motorola) with microUSB power sockets, but handset A's
charger is not compatible with handset B and vv.

Tim,

You mentioned that your phones (on O2) always seemed to work
better than other people's phones.

On the A417 just east of Cirencester two days ago, no O2
signal at all (nor Orange, Three or T-Mobile).

Did you try turning off 3G and reverting to the old network which has
better coverage?

Not then, but the phone does (did) scan both GSM and UMTS.

A day later in London though I remembered what you had said
and switched the phone to GSM only and it worked much

Obviously not the £3.54 a month (ex VAT), but increased to
£3.77 a month (ex VAT) in January, contract I am on then.
That came with no phone (or data) at all.

And there are far too many places where the mobile signal is
just not reliable, like home, or my partner's family home in
Oxfordshire, or my sister's house just a few miles up the
road from you, Tim.

Even in the middle of London, I often find that even though
the phone claims there is plenty of signal, I either cannot
make a call, or the call quality is roughly equivalent to
that of the cold calls from India trying to persuade me to
download their malware onto my computer.

No, that wouldn't do because I use my phone a lot. ;-)

Hmm. I drive up-and-down the country regularly, and across it, even down
to the pointy bit in the bottom left-hand corner as well as the big smoke
and don't see the widespread problems with reception others do. At home
my phone uses one of several masts, which is why the front of the house
is in Woburn or High Wycombe, whereas the back is somewhere else.
Apparently. Being near a motorway probably helps.

I can use my phone when others struggle or can't use theirs. I even have
better reception than some permanent vehicle phones, even when I am
sitting in the vehicle. It's not that my current phone is particularly
good, as all my phones seem better than others'. The only common
denominator in all this is that I have always been with O2.

I do experience two blind spots though: one is in a tiny village in Oxon,
the other a tiny village in Salop. Oddly enough I am quite happy to be
out of reach in both though Latitude still registers my location so I
think that may go via wifi. In fact, both places have good wifi so I
could use Skype for calls if I had to. :-)

Try coming here then. O2 may be a little better than
Orange/T-Mobile, but it is hardly reliable.

I know, because my German phone is on O2 Germany and it only
reliably roams on O2 UK (it claims to roam on Vodafone,
which is the least bad network here, but it does not
actually work...).

The 3G network is now over used and congested. If you are just phoning
then turn off 3G and revert to the older network which is not only
underused but has a wider coverage throughout the country. This is
particularly useful in crowded places like railway termini, airports and
shopping precincts where so many are using 3G.

I do not think that that has been the problem in the past,
as I have only been using a 3G capable phone since mid
January. But I shall remember to try turning 3G off in busy
places if I have problems in the future.

There is not a lot of 3G around here anyway.

I guess they did better with the Mini Pro. ;-)

You know, a story on El Reg that isn't to do with Apple, Google, or
patents.

Indeed, it's a lot more convenient than memory-hungry browsers. It's
pretty astonishing on WiFi what it is capable of.

So's pretty much everything that isn't Arachne. Granted, NetSurf
looks pretty good, but without piles of scripty nonsense, there's
only so far it can go.

Ouch!

Sometimes it is just *convenient*.

I visited a supplier of Japanese stuff on Monday. OMG, so many cute
boxes! Okay, it might be dried squashed octopus tentacles or
something inside, but the box it was in was mind-numbingly cute (and
this is from a hardened animé viewer).
Me: How much is this?
Them: Um...
There were no barcodes, only internal product codes like SAK07, the
pricelist was arranged in the order of items in the printed
catalogue... The people were absolutely lovely, but you wonder what
sort of nightmare inventory is when you see nothing even remotely
electronic in the stock room. It looked like stuff was ticked on
paper. A small investment could completely change that, and recoup
its cost in freeing up the work hours spent managing the stock.

> um, formal complaints.

:-) I rarely bother, customer service ain't what it used to be and I
suspect more often than we'd like, complaints are neatly filed in the
shredder...

> That says a lot about your customers. :-)

I'd prefer an actual ticket. QR codes on phones are a convenience,
not a replacement.

Best wishes,

Rick.

Which entry in particular? I read the latest one. Wow. I can see the
steam from here!

What is the legal standing of withholding part payment as a "fine"?
Though, to be honest more people ought to take that approach. As for
the identify yourself stuff, I recently had Orange phone me to punt
their satellite receiver again. They asked for my reference number
from my bill so they knew I was me... "Madam", I said, "tu m'a
appelle, tu souviens, hein? Ton numéro n'est pas disponible sur
l'affichage de ma phone, donc, peut-être toi deve identifier
toi-même? Je crois que tu as des informations de ma facture dernière?
Bien, dit-moi le montant." Reply, a lot of words adding up to her
saying she doesn't have *that* information. Reply: "Tristement, tu as
omis de prouver ton identité. Bon fin journée." Then I hung up.

Best wishes,

Rick.

PS: before anybody asks, the first bit says: Madam, you called me,
remember, huh? Your number is not available on my phone's display,
therefore perhaps you should identify yourself to me? I believe you
have information about my most recent bill? Good, tell me how much it
was for.
and the second part says: Sadly, you have failed to prove your
identity. Have a nice day!
All of this being said in *familiar* language, intentionally (as it
is suitably condescending to the twit who phones YOU then asks YOU to
prove who YOU are!).

Frankly I don't care and look forward to a day in court to explain myself.

These companies think nothing of extra charges for this, that, and the
other. We can play at that game too.

They are now on notice that communicating with me again will cost them
fifty quid a time.

If you were to upgrade your EasiWriter, you could read the docx files
directly:-

extract from EasiWriter description on web:-

"...offering compatibility with industry standard file formats (most
notably, MS Word RTF, DOC and DOCX formats and the ODT format as used
by OpenOffice.org). "

If either ArtWorks or StrongED were to fail on a new version of the
operating system it would prevent me from upgrading.

The latest EasiWriter will import .docx files (and OpenOffice files
too), and I was able to convert a .docx file that a lot of my
Word-using coevals in the local MS Society branch couldn't cope with
at all :-)
