You've lost me. Sheds full of pink stuff, to me, would suggest SanRio
somewhere...

"Toys 'R' Us", known in France as "Toys 'R' Us" because. being American,
they didn't think to translate that to 'Les jouets sont nous'.

Or more likely 'Jouets tnos nous'.

Ah.

Around here it is "King Jouet". Never been in 'cos I'm worried I
might spend lots of money I don't have on a Lego nostalgia trip. :-o

I don't see any reason why a company should change its trading name just
because it operates in a foriegn country.

In Daventry you will find a company called Meister abrasives.

There used to be a UK company, just outside Daventry, called Master
abrasives - they used to produce "Mason Master" drills and other products.
It seems they have now reverted to the name of the founder

Quite. Can you imagine Coca-Cola, Renault, Rolls-Royce or
Samsung having a local name in each country?

Don't be silly, all those examples you have given (except possibly Coca-Cola)
are proper names. They aren't translatable anyway. Or were you making a
joke?

Perhaps you should ask the question in reverse? What would you think of a
company called, say, "Ordinateurs Pour Tous" setting up a shop in Britain.
Do you think they would do well selling their product? Or would they do
better if they called themselves "Computers For All"?

If the company name means an offensive word in that country it would be
a good idea to change its name.

Thanks!

I have bookmarked that one.

Then, of course, there are the 'unfortunate' URLs because so
many people (me excluded) do not use hyphens in domain
names:

eg.

A site called 'Who Represents' where you can find the name
of the agent that represents a celebrity. Their domain
name...

Quite.

And, although not a Slurl, I always read www.nsandi.co.uk as
a site for someone/something called N Sandi. It took me
weeks to see the connection with National Savings.

That has dredged up these memories:

The Toyota MR2 which French name translates to Toyota Poo in English. And
that's the polite version. :-)

The Mistubishi Starion (which the Japanese intended to be named after a
male horse - they already had a Colt model - but fell foul of Engrish and
it ended up as the Colt Starion). Would that they would use a literal
English translation of their company name: Three Water Chestnuts.

Naming things. It's not just ROL who can confuse (potential) customers.

Does "Triumph Acclaim" really translate to "Sieg Heil" and were German
sales of that car affected, or is this yet more urban/Internet myth?

According to one website, that is a possible translation, but it was
never marketed in Germany. (I wonder why)

> Does "Triumph Acclaim" really translate to "Sieg Heil"

No.

There is a perfectly good German word 'Triumph' which is
much closer in meaning to the English word.

Duden (equivalent of OED) gives the meaning of 'Triumph' as
(translated)
a) great success, proud victory
b) pride in bringing home a prize

'Sieg' has the meaning of successful outcome of a fight or
competition, used (as English 'victory') as much for
sporting or polical situations.

Heil (noun) is a complex word with a number of shades of
meaning and never really easy to translate. It is to do with
Happiness, feeling well in oneself, used in elevated speech.
I cannot think when I last heard anyone actually use the
word in speech, rather than in somewhat formal writing.

heil (adjective) is simpler, meaning healthy or recovered
from an illness; also undamaged.

Acclaim does not come anywhere near it.

> and were German sales of that car affected, or is this
> yet more urban/Internet myth?

Must be an obscure urban myth - never heard it before.

Sieg Heil was a political slogan, which does sound good,
until you start to examine it. Like most slogans, they
seldom actually mean anything anyway.

Russell, thank you for this. I have a colleague who insists this is true;

From the latest "Môretsu Pirates", I present this one. The Royal
Family (long story...) call their home planet or somesuch "Serenity".
A sly nod to Joss Whedon? Either way, pirate girl Marika got a book
