First I'd like to thank all the folks who contributed useful things to
this thread.
Thank you.

Purchased the chosen device a HP LaserJet P2055dn from Novatech on Friday
PM and the device was delivered today (Monday) in the AM.

Obviously first job after connecting to the network etc, was to set it up
and get it printing from a PC, and on the Win 7 Laptop that was a breeze.

Next I wanted to get to grips with making it work with the two SARPCs on
the LAN, and this was suprisingly easy.

Took the advice given by Dave Higton, and had installed the JetDirect
stuff some days ago.

So I just shift+ Right clicked the HPLJ-5 printer icon, clicked on the
JetDirect button, entered the Host name of the printer (Already entered in
Choices networking... Both Host name and IP address) in the "Printer" box,
OK and Saved from the Printers Icon bar icon.

It just worked okay.

Dave

As for installing on the beast running 32 bit XP well... I'm still trying
to get that to work.

D.

Can anyone point me to a good tutorial for setting up wireless printer
and email.
Why?
My computer illiterate brother in late February signed up for BT
broadband. Initial confusion because he was on a Talk-Talk phone
contract, but did not tell me, who got the job of making the
arrangements.
After two weeks wait during which time he had me buy an Acer laptop
and Kodak Hero all-in-one WiFi printer a BT engineer turned up and
changed the wall socked fitted some filters, plugged in a BT Homehub 3
and went.
Brother had not a clue what to do but over the next few days he
thought the system was faulty since he was getting no incoming calls
and his answerphone was not working though he could make calls. Calls
to BT resulted in him being told 'over the phone' the system was
working correctly. Eventually an engineer came who condemned his
answer phone and was critical of some wiring.
Brother buys modern answerphone; still no incoming calls but we made
a discovery. He called me and I missed the call; 1471 revealed an
unknown number but Brother area code. I rang the number and Brother
answered. We saw the light!!. Bt had changed his phone number but not
told Brother about it. Bt embarrassed but would not change number back
to old one.

He is now disgusted with whole affair and wishes he had not bought
computer. So far he has an internet connection i.e. he can browse the
web but has been unable to set up an email account using Thunderbird
and cannot get the printer wirelessly connected.

If he read Daves email he would be green with envy.
So sorry for the long off topic mail, but this affair has really got
to us both and a good tutorial web site would be a great help I feel.

BT should have provided him with a BT email address and password as well
as a User name and password - have a look throuh all the letters they have
sent him (of course that info may have been sent to him by email to his
new BT address ! or to the preferred email address he gave them when he
set up the account) any other email address will need to be linked to his
BT account in order to use their mail system etc to help prevent spammers
using their system. I had to set this up some years ago in order to use my
existing argonet and riscos addresses.

The POP3 server and SMTP server are both mail.btinternet.com and the
security or authentication setting is the main email address and password
as supplied by BT - NOT the separate User name and password that BT
supply. I think I had to set the port but cannot remember - the URL below
suggests port 25 or 587.

The news server is news.btconnect.com and the security / authentication
setting is the User name and password that BT supplies (NOT email and
password).

The following url might help:

http://www.pdoc.co.uk/btbroadband.shtml

which also has links to the BT site.

I've just noticed that for POP3 I have port 110 configured.

That is correct for POP3 (receiving mail).

The 25 is SMTP (sending mail), however some ISPs (such as my Orange)
block SMTP to hosts other than their own [*], so some providers offer
an alternative port (the 587) that the ISP shouldn't have blocked.

Best wishes,

Rick.

* - if ever you receive an email from me, the headers will show that
it is always sent from Orange's SMTP host, no matter what the From
address says.

Alan,
Thankyou very much for this info and the URL.
It seems my brother is not alone in struggling with BT email setup.
We may now make headway when the confusing amount of mail is carefully
sorted knowing what we are looking for.

Thanks again

Malcolm

As a footnote, I can report I eventually managed to get the printer
working with XP., though I had to climb a mountain and trek at my desk fpr
many hours just to get next door.

Funny old world, I was expecting the difficult bit to be the RISC OS to
printer as the challenge, whereas in the end it was actually the easiest
bit.

But I'm back for another session.

So, the printer now works from all the computers, both RISC OS (Two OS
versions) and Windows (Two OS versions).

Now comes the really really brown stuff question, and this always has been
a PITA since day one with VRPC.
I have on occasion got it to work when the printer was directly connected
to the Underlying PC, but never successfully network connected even in the
past I had a print server as part of the NAS.

Getting printing to work from VRPC-AdjustSA, as no matter what I enter
into the Connections dialogue as described in the VRPC manual, Printer
section, has proven impossible.

Some advice please chaps.

Thanks
Dave

Info:
VRPC-Adjust SA, RO 6.20 Running under Win XP-SP3
RO Printers+ version 1.91a
RO driver is HP LaserJet 5 (HostFS::HP_LaserJet_5 in the dialogue produces
the usual "Disk not found")

The actual printer on the LAN has the Host name of NPIA3D893

Right, I've now got it working.
By forgetting the VRPC manual (Pah!)

What was needed... Install the JetDirect Module, then enter the Actual
printer Host name in its writable and all was okay.

Damn! You've beaten me to it. This was going to be one of those
glorious moments when I could repay some of the guidance received
from him because I actually knew more than one Dave Symes, having
known that it's the real name of the printer model - not the PDF -
that needs to be inserted. (And I only knew that because Ian Hamilton
had kindly guided me through it when tackling a TurboDriver version
for SA-VRPC.)

Glad it's working - I did promise you it would.

I found the T.O.M.S. manual for the VRPC more helpful than the manual
that comes with the program.

Sorry to rain on your moment of glory Michael... Still, thanks for
thinking about the problem anyway.

There's still time ;-) and of course you obviously know a lot more than I
