It's really quite simple Stuart.

1) The most important point really.
I only do a small amount of printing for my business paperwork, whereas
Fay does masses of printing, and she has a particular liking for HP Laser
printers.

2) Though I do much less printing than SWMBO I also like HP printers.

So...

I have a couple of ancient DeskJets here, a 500, a 540C, and
something (420?) buried under a pile of video tapes. Haven't used
them in nearly a decade now, but even so I still have nightmares
about refilling those ink carts. It was some fruitcakey
gravity/pressure system. And you had to take a lot of care given the
printer's init routine involved *slamming* the print head into the
side of the printer. That's not a fault, I called HP many years ago
and was told it was by design to mix up the ink particles. Yeah...
I'll tell you what though, even though modern tech surpassed the
capabilities of my old HPs, they're built like tanks and roughly as
reliable too, so long as the rubber ink shoe hasn't perished.

Given everything else here has a USB plug on it, it might see if I
can resurrect the 540 for my RiscPC. It's either that or the Stylus
640. Might end up being the Epson (cheaper inks). A job for another
day...

Best wishes,

Rick.

That's right: other makes are compatible with the HP system.

It sounds like the printer I ought to have bought!

I got the Samsung ML/2571(N) from the same supplier - it has
parallel, USB & also network connections. It's been excellent, using
the same !Printers setup as the old HP5L - in fact that was better
than the Samsung PDF supplied, which didn't seem to work. The HP
LasJet-4 printer definition, the LasJet-5 and also the LasJet-6 ones
all work.

I'm surprised that the man-who-sells-these-things hasn't popped up!

I now refill the cartridges myself at a cost of about 10 pounds a
time. Not mucky if you're careful.

OK, I hadn't looked whether there is a RISC OS driver for the 2055D.
http://www.mw-software.com/software/gutenprint/supported.html
doesn't include any printer with 2055 as part of its model number.
Do you like the look of any other printers on that list?

Look at computer recycling places.

We use several HP Lazerjets which we get secondhand for around £40 from
http://www.it-green.co.uk/Cambs_computer_recycling.html

They usually have a plentiful selection, some duplex even.

A very sensible idea.

When my old HP 4050 eventually died after may years and a HUGE amount of
work I replaced it with a HP 4100 from a computer recycling company on ebay
about 2 years ago. Very cheap (about 30 GBP) and in grate condition.

If you don't mind a bulky printer then these older models are great value
and, like many similar, it's parallel and network with PS. Plus unlike many
modern preinters you can easily refill the toner cartridges so very cheap to
run.
