Can anyone recommend a web counter that can be preset to a specific
count and has a long life span?

Does your provider provide PHP? If so, you could find a script on the web
and host your own to your own specification.

Thus you would have total control.

If you need pictures of digits, I'm sure I have some in stock.

Best wishes,

John

I use www.statcounter.com which allows you to set the start number and
also various other parameters.

Mmm, web counters. How very 1996...

These days you more often have access to the server logs, which means you
can extract the number of hits (and lots more besides) in a more flexible
way.

Of course you are right Theo - I have to admit I haven't really caught
up in this rapidly changing world ;-)

As you have pointed out most of the modern counter software now
available allow access to server log information as well.

May I thank all who responded - I have settled on the excellent
Sitemeter suggested by Ian. This is just what I need - inconspicuous
and can be tailored to my requirements - counter ignores hits made by
the website owner - brilliant and provides a host of other stats.

Andrew - www.owlart.net doesn't show the counter in NetSurf (r13329).
A small icon is shown instead of a counter when accessed on a PC with
Firefox, 9.0.1.

You can also set it to email you once a week with the last 7 days visits
and page views. It's a very useful free resource.

I use Sitemeter and also analyse the server logs.

I normally use the ones provided with cPanel, but one one site I#ve
used a little Perl script:

######################################################################
# Basic Graphical Counter Version 1.0 #
# Copyright 1999 Frederic TYNDIUK (FTLS) All Rights Reserved. #
# E-Mail: tyndiuk@ftls.org Script License: GPL #
# Created ??/??/97 Last Modified 05/30/99 #
# Scripts Archive at: http://www.ftls.org/cgi/ #
######################################################################
# Function : #
# This Script is a little graphical counter #
# This is my First CGI program... #

The count is held in a text file so you can set it to whatever you
like. You need to call the script for each digit so you can have as
many as you like. The last one increments the count.
