#3435 — RISC OS Links Database

Does anyone know if Paul Vigay's RISC OS Links Database at
http://www.riscos.org/links/ is still being updated?

The list of recent updates don't look promising (with a whole bunch on the
29th March 2011 and nothing after that). I'm wondering how much use a tool
like Martin Avison's Rover would be these days, if the databse it relies on
is now Moribund.

I don't think so, and certainly several times I've used it to try to
find software it's come up with a dead link.

I haven't tried Rover for quite a while, but I really don't think it
would now come up with reliable information, excellent idea though it
was.

With best wishes,

Peter.

Yes, it worked a treat while the database was being updated.

Unfortunately no-one has taken on the updating task, or tried to convince
developers to do it, since Paul's sad demise. It is a great pity, because
it was by far the most complete reference to what was available.

If anyone can think of a way to revive the links database, or suggest
another database that could be used instead, I would be glad to hear any
suggestions!

Martin

Perhaps each link should go instead to a wiki with some sort of download
or links page for a given piece of software. Then if anyone finds a
broken link but hunts down the correct link (or not) they can update the
page accordingly. The same goes for new stuff such as "this updated
version hosted not by the original author and mentioned only on a closed
message board works on ARMini" and suchlike. ;-)

Is there some underlying issue here? I would have thought if the
update was simply a recompile to make the original OMAP3 or OMAP4
friendly, then there seems little point getting all the VRPC users
out there excited. If there was a genuine upgrade or bugfix, I would
hope it would be announced through the usual channels (c.s.a.a).

Only the usual one: as otherwise unsupported software is patched and
uploaded for download to somewhere other than its 'official' home, it can
be hard to track down. And: how do you know it's there to be tracked down?

True. Though, of course, announcement alone isn't enough! ;-)
