I run a small business and make a lot of phone calls - I'd have ditched it at the first sign of problems. A re-dialler, which only cost a little over a tenner, automatically adds the extra digits to the numbers we dial, when appropriate, so the whole thing is transparent. We just save a lot of money - recommended! Chris.

Undoubtedly true in some cases but AIUI if the lines are set up properly, all outgoing calls can all be given a CLI number - perhaps for the switchboard. In the case of the old bill, they will give out officer's mobile numbers sometimes so you can contact them but they then withold those same numbers when they call you. You're kidding, right? I know exactly how these places work, thanks. Using a false name is commonplace and encouraged; often scripted. A bit like the fictitious names which appear as signatories on a great deal of junk mail. For another thing: there aren't too many natives of Mumbai called Malcolm, Steve or Sharon but some clown thinks we are gullible enough to believe them and more likely to do business with someone whose name sounds English. On another note: the OED has announced that the threshold of use has fallen so the word 'gullible' is being removed from all dictionaries. www.timil.com/gullible.htm -- Tim Hill of timil.com . . . * supports TFT & shares in cheaper ethical telecoms http://tjrh.eu/phone * has a genuine & spam-proof address for Usenet http://www.invalid.org.uk/ * accepts incoming email: substitute postmaster@ for tim@ ... When I used to live in the UK, I had a little program that would check
for an unknown number and get ArcFax ready to take the call on the first
ring.
These days, "hello" and "âllo" sound alike, and if some bod starts
yammering on and on about something to sell you [*], I either hang up or
say, in my best clueless English, "what the hell are you on about?".
Usually, ironically, it is Orange themselves trying to punt their
satellite receiver kit...
* - There's some quirk of French law where agreements made over the
phone can be held as binding, this is used to screw people over
depressingly regularly.
On the bright side, there are (were?) many mailshot adverts that
screamed "YOU HAVE WON TEN THOUSAND EUROS" and on the back,
admitting that it was a draw and you had to provide all sorts of
info in order to be entered into the draw. Some old lady took 'em
to court and the court found in her favour - it said she'd won in
inch high letters, so cough up the cash...
Best wishes,
Rick.

That could be a problem if it got on a database?

He says 'I'm a pensioner' - immediate termination of conversation. The 'I'm a bankrupt' was a speculative strategy.
