#2284 — Listing folder names

SubjectListing folder names
Message-ID<e7625b2c52.c.n.l.f@virgin.net>
Is there an app from which I can print the directory structure within
a folder?
I want a list of the cd names associated with each of their composers
within my 'Classics' folder so I don't buy a cd I've already got at
home.

I had this problem/question some while back attempting similar on hundreds
of MP3 directories, and the answer was an app by

Steve Fryatt called !Locate

I thought I'd read someones query some time ago.

As soon a I saw !Locate I thought 'of course!' But then when I tried
it doesn't seem to solve the problem because I can't see how to get it
to locate and report on the folders of mp3 files, as opposed to the
mp3's themselves.

I'll have another shuftie in case I've missed something; but I'm
thinking that here's a gap in the market.

Well, I've just done it to illustrate.

My real music store is far too big to play with, so I've done it on a
smaller Music directory, the one in which I have a few of my favourites.
My stuff is stored inside the Root "Music" dir in the form of:

Directory as Artist name.
Sub dir of an album name
Sub dir of another album name
And so on.

So...

A folder/Directory named "Music" contains a number of sub directories each
named after artist, within those sub directories are the album sub dirs
containing MP3s

Run !Locate to the icon bar.
Drop the Music directory on the icon bar icon.

In the presented window do the following.

In the "File name" writable put * (ie wildcard)
Then, on the "Type" button, tick Directories.

Click Search. A window will open showing progress. When there is
no further activity, menu over the window > Save > Path names > drag the
Save as icon to a directory.

I ended up with a text file, thus: (Well it was somewhat longer than this
sample).

...

The business!
Thanks for that. A wildcard, eh! That was my problem; couldn't see how
to 'influence' the writable slot.

Your solution seems to satisfy my needs and so that, I think, is where
I'll leave it. However, if I can see an advantage (for my needs) after
having looked at Peter Young's advice, I'll report back.

What's *ETree? I must have missed something in previous posts.
What application or module supplies this command?

John - PWNED! <giggle>

JGH - purely out of interest, how did you coax the BASIC assembler to
assemble from a file instead of code held in memory?

Best wishes,

Rick.

Intercept OSWORD 0 to feed a slightly processed version of
each line from the input file. I've lost the source and
still haven't yet got around to recreating it :)

Essentially, it monitors for an opening [ or >, once it sees
an [ it then prepends every input line with OPT0: until end
of file. It then resets PTR and does a second pass prepending
with OPT3:. A line starting with > links to another file so

If you haven't already found an app that does what you need, this is
exactly the sort of thing that Gavin Wraith loves to write one of his
"throwaway" Lua programs for. Several times in his Archive articles
he has offered to do so. And he often comes up with a result by

Methinks I'd be looking for a routine that produces a TSV list of your
directories and files (if path-depth varies, supply dummy columns at
left so that leafname is always in the last column). This you could
then drop into a spreadsheet and sort or search to your heart's
content.

Right oh.

If Cartatonic doesn't do the trick, I will.
I might even do it anyway.
