One could then suggest that, as he was under your employ (even as a work
experience), and with access to computers on admin privs, that it was
not technically a criminal offence as you suggested, but rather an
expected intervention as part of his job. ;-)

It's just a bog-standard C module that prompts for a (hard-coded) password, and if correct it kills itself. If wrong, it calls reset. It is a real rough'n'ready hack job to accomplish a specific little task. The next time I'm on my RiscPC, I'll take a look-see for the code. Best wishes, Rick.

Ah, yes, the good old "we'll not load some drivers but will load others and we'll screw up your icons for you too" mode. ;-) I try to avoid Safe Mode. The last time I made any serious use of it was a Win98 machine when picking apart Sony's rootkit. Didn't have Internet in those days, so had to roll my own fix by yanking out the CD driver and reinstalling from the Windows CD-ROM. Bloody piece of crap software dropped rubbish all over the place, replaced the ATAPI driver, made it refuse to play most audio CDs *and* messed up accessing many CD-Rs (even data discs). Essentially, it killed my CD drive. And Safe Mode with prompting was the only way to tell it not to load those drivers, so I could yank them out... Meh. And than all the icons were all everywhere they shouldn't be... Best wishes, Rick.

I have been thinking of setting up a business specifically to service
the Geminus market. My plan is to remove a pair of screens from their
existing frames and fit them into a single wooden frame.
So, as you will imagine, I have been following this thread with
enthusiasm; not to say despair!
Before this thread, I had thought my main problem was the colour of
the wood - but I have now come to the conclusion that, not only
shrinkage, but the screen measurement of the finished article might
become an issue.
However, Aycee - pronounced "A.C." - at Trading Standards, believes
that, in the light of some of the issues raised in this thread, if I
advertise using 'cubits' I should be fine.
Thus heartened I was all ready to stsrt looking for my saw, when I
discovered, by way of the wife's tape measure (which I 'borrowed' from
her sewing box) that the length of nails is far from predictable!
I despair.
It would seem that our world is far from perfect. Would that we were
in the time of Shakespeare, when my nails would have been made to
order by the smith up the street; whose concern for 'wastage' would
not be influenced by lack of a 'CNC' or 'Standard size' materials, in
a world where there was no need to translate from one ideogram into
another.

And in conclusion... I was in the loft earlier, moving stuff around when I encountered the box for the supposed 22" Monitor... Surprise, surprise, in small letters on the bottom corner of the box is says 21.5 inches, so I looked again at my Sales Invoice and it most positively say 22" so I popped along to the site from which I purchased... and there it is presented as a 22" monitor. I guess it depends on whether the manufacturer is measuring the glass
front of the display, or the amount *actually* visible within the
constraints of the bezel. Logic would say it's the visible area, but
then logic would say that 1GB = 1024MB in harddisc sizes... <g,d&r>
If you think that is being screwed, I have on my RiscPC mom's old IBM
Aptiva monitor. It's a 14" jobbie from the early '90s. When used on a
proper VGA display, it has maybe inch to inch-and-a-half black borders
around the image. No amount of fiddling with the controls will make the
picture larger. Faffing with MDFs can claim a centimetre, but there is
*no* way to fill the display. It just won't do it. [*] No obvious
h-size/v-size pots inside either.
So there's a 14" monitor with a screen that I haven't bothered to
measure (to see if it really is 14") that loses 2-3 inches in pointless
black borders.
And you think you got screwed over half an inch. :-P
Best wishes,
Rick.
* - Its concept of contrast is highly crap too, for good whites, the
blacks are a light and washed out shade of grey, it's an altogether
exceedingly naff monitor.
