#2534 — Big glossy knitting book - published under RISC OS!

Message-ID<8ac3113352.harriet@blueyonder.co.uk>
I've just brought back my big glossy thirty-pound copy of "A Stitch in
Time" from the bookshop where it was on order (publication eagerly
awaited for almost a year)
http://www.knitonthenet-shop.com/PBSCCatalog.asp?ItmID=8805935
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Stitch-Time-Knitting-Patterns-1930-1959/dp/0955620651
and opened the front cover to discover, in amongst all the routine
rubric: "This book was produced on RISC OS using Ovation Pro, together
with Artworks, Photodesk, DPscan[sic], plus other custom written
software."

Despite months of discussion I wasn't aware that anyone connected with
the project had any RISC OS associations - does anyone known anything
about this? Who wrote the software? Is there publicity to be got?
:-D

The former Crawford printers are likely to be the people involved
since they were devoting their time to doing/repusblishing Books.

Yes, apparently the programmer is Gavin Crawford.

Yes, my wife and I produced this book. This latest title, along with
others we've published was created on RISC OS using Ovation Pro and a
host of other programmes. I've been using RISC OS for many years and
use it for all my publishing work - I wouldn't want to use anything
else!

Well done! It's great to see RISC OS still being used for commercial
purposes.

Makes me wonder how many are using RISC OS to maintain commercial web
sites, as I do, though I have to resort to the Dark Side to build PayPal
buttons and to (also) display in browsers what I edit in StrongED. I have
never found a way to work productively in Windoze thanks to its 'only
edit on the top', cluttered window furniture, and 'full size means full
screen' nonsense. I could get used to it if I had to but..

I do, I use RDP for access to the PC for the bits RISc OS can't do.

I use a PC most of the time now (sorry...), and an emulator for the
stuff Windows isn't so good at.
Before, I used my RiscPC and a VNC session to a PC. That's the joy of
home networking, plugging all this stuff together. ;-)

Best wishes,

Rick.

I use my Iyonix to run my business (primary school websites) and
really couldn't be so responsive to my customers without it.

Very much hoping that Armini, or an alternative will be my next buy
(the Iyonix I've had since 2003 with new power supply and 1GB memory).

I do use it in conjunction with a laptop PC to get at Youtube for
video and to use MSoffice - RDP, !Lanman 98 and Uniserver are simply
excellent. The Iyonix does 90% of the work required.

If I had to use VNC, I think I'd use Linux at the other end. RDP is
the only really good thing about windows, that keeps me using it at
home.)

As well as the books that we publish, I also use RISC OS to develop
and maintain our commercial website www.knitonthenet.com
Although the intended target audience are not RISC OS users, as it
does use some JavaScript and CSS that probably won't render well in RO
browsers.

The site is developed in StrongED. The local copy of the site is held
on my Iyonix, and as I'm coding the php I test it by serving the site
across the network using Webjames and view the results in Firefox on a
Windows machine and in Ubuntu. When everything is ready to go live I
use !SiteMatch to upload the changed files.

There is also a facility on the site to create customised knitting
graphpaper charts as PDFs (www.knitonthenet.com/designchart/) which
are created dynamically on the fly. This is done on a RiscPC, again
using webjames to serve the created PDF.

Thank you.

The previous books that we've published don't mention the fact that
the were created using RISC OS, but for this one I wanted to include a
small note about the fact. I'm pleased that it has been remarked upon.
