I'll try it with lazy task swapping on - hadn't realized there had
been any developments. Thanks.

Might try Textease 5.93 on RS/5.19 - and see if this provides some
pointers.
There seems to be two 26bit modules 'EFFfont' (24 Feb 98) and FontChange
1.02 (22May 97) that are loaded on systems less than 5.
Anyone know what they do?

Just tried RS/5.19/HostFS - with 'Textease' V5.93 (Jun 11 2003)
Loaded onto Iconbar.
Open window - and write - Sound working.
Cut a piece out of 'NightSky' window with 'Paint' and drop onto window.
Able to rotate sprite.
Quick test - seems ok.

In 2005 the last update for Acorn version that they had on the downloads section of their site was to 5.91 which was a 32 bit compile. I've tried turning off Lazy task swapping using !Laziness from http://support.riscos.com/Support/Releases/index.htm which although written in 1999 is in BASIC and seems to work on the BB-xm. But it really hasn't helped. Perhaps the later version 5.93 would work but there do not seem to be any links to upgrades as RM Education Ltd only seem to be selling (at the special price of £699) to the windows market. With version 5.91 - what are the details given in the 'About this
program'?
Has anyone contacted Softease to find out what the position is of
32bit/ARM7 upgrades?

My understanding is that Softease was taken over by RM Education Ltd which is only interested in windows software (not surprising when one considers RM's history and competition with Acorn in the 1980s and '90s to sell their computer systems into UK schools). Softeases URL www.softease.co.uk is redirected to http://www.rmedusoftware.com/ and http://www.textease.com/ is now also an RM Education site and I can find no mention of anything but windows versions. The original downloads page http://www.textease.com/downloads/ now gives the error: Directory Listing Denied This Virtual Directory does not allow contents to be listed." Although RiscOS Ltd still has a page of details for softease / textease http://foundation.riscos.com/html/database/pages/softease/index.htm and googling gives a contact for them http://www.mylocalservices.co.uk/Derbyshire/Computer_Systems_and_Software/1139537/Softease_Ltd.html ringing the number gives the error that it is not recognised. I've also found a reference to an earlier textease website which says: "Welcome to the NEW Textease website textease.com. Softease, 3T and RM's curriculum software division have now combined to become Lightbox Education!" which on further searching leads back to RM Education. I have now rung RM Education and spent some time discussing Textease Studio with them. Since they took over the program in 2005 as expected there has been no development to the Acorn version and although they suspect that they may have stored away the sources etc somewhere, it is not readily available and would not be commercially viable to find it and let us have the upgrade to the last version. Even if they did find it, the developments to their windows and Mac versions means it would be out of step with their CT range. If the raspberry pie and similar systems took off in schools they would consider developing software for them but it is highly unlikely that it would be running on RiscOS. So yes I have tried without luck to contact Softease, but have contacted their successor RM Education and there is no possibility of getting the last 5.93 upgrade to 32bit RISCOS or any further ARM7/32bit upgrades. It's part of the AIF (Acorn Image Format) header which describes to the runtime system (which will be the Shared C Library for C and C++ programs) how much memory is used by read-only variables (usually contained within the file, but can be relocated once in memory) and read-write variables (usually allocated by the runtime after the read only area in memory). The values themselves wont mean much, but differences will indicate different versions of the program. ---druck

Yes, but only the upgrade to version 5.91 was available and that was their first attempt at 32bit. It had lots of problems as I discribed and doesn't work on a BB-xm. I am told that there were 2 later versions 5.92 and the last 5.93 which was stable and with RO5.18 will work properly on the Iyonix without turning off lazy task swapping. Unfortunately at the time in 2005 just before Softease was "taken over" by RM Education and further Acorn support ended, the free upgrades that they put up on their site did not include the 5.92 and 5.93 versions. If you see my other posting about trying to contact Softease and then ringing RM, you will see that RM Education are "unable" to even supply these even if they could find them. The protection means that these upgrades will only work with registered earlier versions which are 26bit so the installer will not work on a BB-xm. There is now a version being tested - on a 'Beagle'.
At the moment - it is reported to work ok.

What's the problem with drawfiles on RISC OS 5? I can't say that I've ever
noticed one.
> Oh, and !Sleuth3.
The problem here is that all of these apps are on borrowed time, and could
just as easily be broken by updates to RISC OS 6 (it's far from unknown for
application developers to make invalid assumptions about APIs, which then
stop working when the OS developers amend those APIs in ways that fit with
the published specifications).
So the question then becomes: should we just stop any development on RISC OS
and turn it into a museum piece? That's the only way to guarantee that
these titles will never stop working. Or should we encourage the use of
software which is supported?

It would depend on whether you just consider it a toy or a working
environment. I still use it for several real world tasks.
It's never going to be 'upgraded' to match a modern system for browsing or
AV etc file handling.
So if an upgrade breaks the things I use it for it's of no use to me.

The loss of Draw and/or Sleuth would be disastrous for me. Both are in
use for far more than just hobby purposes and their loss would
certainly mean me moving to another OS (not sure which, admittedly).
On the other hand perhaps the worst will not happen. After all the
recent solar storm hasn't affected me here in North Yorkshire...

Er, for the second time, Draw is still working fine on RISC OS 5.
