#21792 — RO Pinboard problem

FromDave <dave@triffid.co.uk>
Date2026-02-05 12:42 +0000
SubjectRO Pinboard problem
Message-ID<5ca661bd9adave@triffid.co.uk>
VRPC-DL RISC OS 6.20

I have a Pinboard problem and wondered what's going on.

I have a file called "BP2602" and a reference to it in the Pinboard
Tasks.Obey file.

"XPin HostFS::HardDisc4.$.filepathto.BP2602" plus co-ordinates on the
desktop.

But though it does present in the correct place on the pinboard/Desktop,
the name is now "bp2602" not BP2602.

The file will still run okay when 2/clicked on the Pinboard, by why is the
system changing the name? (I need it to be specifically BP2602).

If I change the actual file name to Bp2602 then it display on the pinboard
as Bp2602.

Thanks
Dave

Done a bit more work on this...

If there are no numerics in the file name it displays on the pinboard
okay, Eg: "BPForms".

With regard to my requirements, It'll only behave if I add a lower case
Alpha character after the BP thus:

"BPx2602"

Or a lower case Alpha character after the numerics thus:

"BP2602z"

What a load of ......

Thoughts...

Thanks

Okay. I have fired up my VRPC running 6.20 and I can replicate your
issue. I cannot replicated on my A9home running 4.42 due to not having
the same options.

Issue on RO6 would appear to be due to the "Object name display" setting
from within Configure-Pinboard-Interface. Under "Object name display"
there a setting: "Show all CAPS in lower case". When ticked this shows
the non numeric portion of the filename that are all in capitals as lower
case: -

     BP2602 = bp2602
BPx2602 = BPx2602 (this displays correctly because the non
numeric part of the filename is is mixture of cases and not all
     uppercase
BP6202z = BP6202z (works for same reason as above)

Hope this helps :)

Paul,
Give that Man a score of Eleven out of Ten. An absolutely wonderful catch.

That was indeed the problem, now fixed.

Much appreciated, thanks

Dave

Nb: Interestingly, many previous experiments showed it was a RISC OS 6.20
problem, and that it didn't happen on any RISC OS 4.39 installs I tested.

Nor even a RPCEmu and RISC OS 5.31.

Neither RISC OS 4.39 or RISC OS 5.3nn have that Pinboard configure option.

If people are reporting problems please give *important* details such as
which OS and filing system you are using, and *note* that there is the
built-in Pinboard and also Pinboard2.

To be fair to Dave, he did state in his original post he was using VRPC
with RISC OS 6.20, also in his example he did indicate the filing system
was HostFS.

From the above details it wasn't too hard to understand which operating
system, filing system or product he was using it on.

He posted enough information for his issue to be resolved.

Mnnn! Considering what my original posting contained, I'm not sure what I
could have added?

I didn't know of the existence of a Pinboard2... Guess that must be a RISC
OS 5.nn thing which I don't use.

Mmnn!
That poses another question or maybe two. :-)

I have a test setup of RISC OS 5.31 (March 25) on a RPCEmu install)

What does Pinboard2 have that the bog standard RISC OS Pinboard doesn't
have?

Is Pinboard2 in all newer versions of RISC OS 5.3nn?

Thanks

Dave

Thanks for the link Martin,

Looks interesting and I've downloaded it, and though I'm very busy ATM,
later when I'm done with a particular job I'm in the middle of, I'll try
it out on some of my Test RISC OS installs.

Thanks for the above link Martin.
Looking at the site, I did not realise it worked with RISC OS versions,
other than 5. Have downloaded to test on my A9home.

Couple of points to note:

1. The supplied Install obey file, does not work, generated file not found
error. I believe this is due it looking for and not finding RO500Hook.

2. Can be installed by merging the !Boot, but the Pinboard 2 Configure app
does did not load, this is due to it being supplied in RO500Hook. Just
manually moved it into RO440Hook, and then worked as expected.

Essentially the Install obey file could do with some improvements.

Following a reboot, it was up and running. Just need to explore it now :)

I've only got it on my mini.m test machine, but it seems every time I
VNC in to it I accidentally click on the pinboard and hide all the open
windows. The only way I've found to unhide them is to use it's menu to
hide and then restore. I looked for some configuration to turn this off,
but didn't find any. The website doesn't have a link to documentation,
as is standard for ROD products.

Goto the Pinboard Configure setup via menu on the pinboard, then
Miscellaneous section second option down sounds like what you are wanting
unticked.

The website itself may not have links to documentation, but the download
contains a 55 page manual.

Hi,
If I create an "EXAMPLE" directory pinboard changes it to "Example". We
can rename it but then Pinboard crashes...
When restarting, the name change was taken into account!!!

So it does - crash occurs with a file or a directory. The new name is
reflected correctly on the SSD after a reboot. Looks like a bug. I
haven't gone through Dave's example but from what he's reporting is
this another bug?

Using Pinboard 2.07

I assume Richard you are using Pinboard 2 from ROD, whereas I think Dave
is using the standard Pinboard from RISC OS 6.20.

Two completely different beasts

That's correct Chris, Pinboard 2 from ROD, V2.07.

I was actually replying to Jean-Michel's posting.
