And it certainly felt faster than the same machine did on 3.5 (I never
really used 3.7)

In older versions of RISC OS every time the wimp switched between applications, it reprogrammed the memory tables to hide all the pages used by the currently running application, and unhide all the pages used by the next application. If you had a large application using a couple of MB loaded, and then a second program (of any size) which claimed Wimp_Poll nulls (instead of using Wimp_PollIdle), the wimp would have to do all the page changing many times per second, which was very processor intensive and lead to a lack of responsiveness. Newer versions of RISC OS avoid this by "lazy task swapping" which reduces the number memory pages which have to be altered every time a task is swapped, by hiding only the pages which overlap between the larger and smaller applications. This feature could be enabled on RISC OS 4 with later revisions of the StrongARM (versions before rev T, had a bug which made it unreliable). IIRC lazy task swapping was present in RISC OS 3.7 too, but was disabled by default. ---druck

For instance if someone wanted applications to be able to use more
than 26MB of application memory each. That is only possible with a
system running in 32-bit mode.

I meant it is only a minor upgrade to users of RO 4. (Should have been
a separate sentence.)

It would have helped if I hadn't read your "...users of 3.x, it is better..." as "...users of 3.x if it is better..." - cunningly inserting an extra two letter word that makes a big difference. :) I blame being so bloody busy at the moment. :( -- Soft Rock Software: http://www.softrock.co.uk Vince M Hudd: http://misc.vinceh.com/about-vinceh/ RISCOSitory: http://www.riscository.com

I can't say none at all, but not many is pretty certain.

Apparently so Rick... One of my customers (Knows computers is one of my hobbies) asked recently, "Just how many computers do you have now to play with Dave" I answered the number, then mentioned in passing that some of them have two or three (Or more under Virtual Box) operating systems installed, and as my Office desk is U shaped, and I have a comfy chair on castors, and there are often at least two, sometimes three of them running at a time, and I'll be doing things on all two/three of them... At which point customer chips in with, "You really should get a life Dave, get out meet people and have some fun". Mmnn! I do that all day, out and about in my White Van (Yes I am) mending their houses and things... After doing that all day, I like to get away from people and be with Fay, who also likes computers, and though she has her own one (SARPC) she also uses a couple of the others. So we are sorted... After all, apart from a lottery win, my damaged body mended, what more could a bloke want than a Wife, Friend, Lover, who's also into computers. :-)) Gimme more screen staring time, unfortunately sleep and work intervene. ;-) Only 481 day 2 hours 14 minutes and some seconds left to retirement. Don't say that - it's a common trope in movies that things happen to those characters who say stuff like "only 'x' days until I retire!". Best wishes, Rick.

For my last few years at work I had a spreadsheet on my Psion
(remember them?), which became famous in the department, and which
calculated the days till retirement. The number of days /from/
retirement is now 2684. I think I've escaped that curse :-)
With best wishes,
Peter.

Various different Psions at various times, starting with the
PocketBook one. Alas, they all eventually failed in one way or other.
With best wishes,
Peter.

Lucky for me then I don't believe in such things... Or Gods, or... If you did, you could just as easily say (in my particular case) things have happend on a number of occasions in my life when I probably should be dead, but I've survived... So maybe my shoulder Angel doesn't want me dead yet. Dave -- Dave Triffid
